About this product

Anyone who fishes seriously for GT eventually replaces the trebles on their lures with heavy single hooks, and the reasons are all practical. A single hook of the same wire is far stronger than any point on a treble. It does far less damage to a fish you intend to release. It does far less damage to your hand when you are unhooking a fish in a moving boat. And it fouls the lure and the leader much less often.

The CatPro 6X is Noeby heavy single, in 5/0. The 6X rating means it is made on the wire diameter normally used for a hook six sizes larger – there is very little heavier available. It is forged, which flattens the wire through the bend and stiffens it further against opening, in high carbon steel with a corrosion-resistant coating.

The eye is sized for heavy split rings and heavy leaders. That matters: an eye too small for a heavy ring is a weak point, and the ring will deform before the hook does.

What does 5X or 6X strength mean?

The X number compares the wire to the standard for that hook size. A 6X hook is built on the wire normally used for a hook six sizes larger. It is far harder to open out under heavy drag, at the cost of needing more force to drive the point home - which is why heavy hooks belong on heavy tackle.

Why replace trebles with heavy singles?

A single of the same wire is far stronger than any point on a treble, does much less damage to a fish you release and to your own hands, and fouls the lure and leader far less often. It is standard practice on serious popping lures.

How do I fit it?

On a heavy split ring, with the point facing forward toward the nose of the lure on the belly position. Use split-ring pliers - opening a heavy ring by hand is how people put hooks through their fingers. The ring must be rated to at least the same load as the hook.

Will one single hook catch as many fish as a treble?

Hook-up rates are marginally lower with a single; landing rates are usually higher, because the hook that does connect holds far better and does not lever itself out. On big fish the trade is worth making.

Why upgrade the hooks on a lure at all?

Because they are the cheapest part of the outfit and the part that fails. Factory hooks on most lures are sized for an average fish, not for a GT. Straightened hooks and opened split rings lose far more good fish than broken line does.

Do I need to change the split rings too?

Rinse them in fresh water and dry before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Check the point on a thumbnail before every session and replace any hook that will not catch.
