Jig heads are consumables. You lose them on rock, on coral and on snags, and anyone who fishes soft plastics seriously gets through a lot of them. Unpainted heads are the sensible answer: they cost noticeably less than painted ones and they fish exactly the same, because what the fish is looking at is the soft plastic, not the lead behind it.

These come in the four weights that cover most fishing – 1/8 oz (about 3.5 g), 1/4 oz (7 g), 3/8 oz (10.5 g) and 1/2 oz (14 g) – on high carbon steel hooks. The round ball head has no built-in bias, so it falls straight, swims level, and works equally well with paddle tails, grubs, worms and creature baits.

If you do want colour, plain heads take jig paint or nail varnish easily, and a chartreuse or orange head is genuinely useful in stained water.

Does an unpainted head catch fewer fish?

There is no good evidence that it does. The fish is looking at the soft plastic; the head is a weight. Painted heads look better in a tackle box and a bright head can help in stained water, but plain lead catches perfectly well.

Can I paint them myself?

Yes, easily. Jig paint, powder paint or even nail varnish will do it. A chartreuse or orange head is worth having for stained water and low light.

Which weight should I buy?

If you are buying one, 1/4 oz (7 g) covers the most ground. 1/8 oz for very calm shallow water and finesse work; 3/8 and 1/2 oz for wind, depth and current.

How do I rig a soft plastic on a jig head?

Nose first, threaded along the body, with the point out through the back so the bait sits straight and flush against the collar or bait keeper. A crooked bait spins and twists your line badly.

When do fish take a jig head?

Usually on the drop. Cast, let it sink while you count, then lift and drop the rod tip. Watch the line as it falls and strike if it stops early or moves sideways.

Is lead safe to handle?

Handling sinkers and jig heads occasionally is not a hazard, but sensible practice applies: do not hold them in your mouth, keep them away from children, and wash your hands before eating after a session.
