Most factory lure hooks are the cheapest component on the lure. Replacing them with a 3X treble is the single best value upgrade in lure fishing: three times the wire gauge of a standard hook for the size, which is more than enough for kingfish, queenfish, barracuda and trevally, without the weight of a big-game 7X treble that would sit your lure too low and kill its action.
These are made from imported polished high carbon steel and chemically sharpened. Chemical sharpening etches the point rather than grinding it, which produces a finer point than a machine can grind – it is sharper out of the box, though it also means the point is delicate and worth checking regularly.
Sizes run 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8, packaged four or five to a box depending on size. Those sizes cover most inshore lures – minnows, small poppers, spoons and blade jigs.
The rule for replacing trebles is to use the same size as the original unless the lure is obviously under-hooked. Going up a size adds weight at the belly or tail and can spoil the swimming action.
