About this product

Demon UltraPoint is a range name rather than a single hook. Demon is Mustad circle-hook family; UltraPoint is the point technology fitted to every one of them. What separates one Demon hook from another is the wire strength and the geometry, and those are the two things worth understanding before you buy.

Wire strength runs from 1X Fine – lighter than standard, penetrates easily, kind to a live bait – through 1X and 2X Strong for general use, to 3X and 4X Strong, built on wire three or four sizes heavier for offshore drag settings. Geometry is either inline, with the point in the same plane as the shank, or kirbed, with the point bent slightly out of plane. Inline hooks gut-hook far fewer fish, which is why release fisheries around the world specify them.

Across all of them, the point is Mustad Opti-Angle needle point with 4.3 UltraPoint, sharpened in three stages so that less metal is removed – which is why it stays sharp rather than rolling over – and the steel is Nor-Tempered, their three-stage Norwegian heat treatment.

Is Demon UltraPoint one hook or a range?

A range. Demon is Mustad circle-hook family and UltraPoint is the point fitted to all of them. The pattern number tells you the wire strength and geometry, which is what actually matters.

What does the X rating mean?

It compares the wire to the standard for that hook size. 4X Strong uses the wire of a hook four sizes larger - much harder to bend, slightly slower to penetrate. 1X Fine uses the wire of a hook one size smaller - penetrates easily, bends sooner. Choose by your drag settings.

How do I set a circle hook?

You do not strike. Let the fish take the bait and turn away, let the rod load, then wind steadily and lift. Striking pulls the hook straight out of the mouth - it is the commonest mistake people make with circle hooks.

Inline or offset?

Inline if you release fish - the point lies in the shank plane and rarely catches soft tissue. Offset is bent slightly out of plane, which lifts the hook-up rate a little but gut-hooks noticeably more fish. Many release fisheries permit inline only.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so it is sharper and stays sharp instead of rolling over on the first piece of coral. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint - a point length 4.3 times the wire diameter.

What does Nor-Tempered mean?

Mustad three-stage computer-controlled heat treatment, done in Norway. It gives the steel a fine-grained microstructure, which Mustad state increases hook strength by up to 30 per cent over conventional tempering.

What will I use them for around Dar es Salaam?

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse used hooks in fresh water and dry them before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Keep them in a sealed box rather than an open tray, and throw away any hook whose point will not catch on a thumbnail.
