About this product

Popping is a noisy, physical way to fish and it is the most exciting. You throw a big lure, sweep the rod hard so the cup mouth digs in and throws water, and somewhere out there a fish decides that the commotion is worth investigating. The size of the cup is the main variable: a bigger cup moves more water and makes more noise, which carries further and matters most in chop or over a reef edge where the fish is well below you.

The NBL9248 is the big one – 200 mm and 116 g, with a prominent cup and a red mouth accent. That weight means a proper popping outfit: a heavy rod and a 14000 to 18000 size reel. It is not a lure to throw on light tackle.

The construction is what makes it worth using on fish that size. A heavy-duty stainless through-wire runs the length of the body, so the load from a GT passes into steel rather than into the moulding, and the ABS body is saltwater grade with 3D eyes.

Off Dar es Salaam it belongs on the reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, and anywhere bait is being pushed to the surface – GT, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, kingfish and big queenfish. Dawn over a tide change is the classic window.

What tackle do I need to throw a 116 g popper?

A dedicated popping rod of 8 to 9 ft rated for the weight, and a 14000 to 18000 size spinning reel with PE 6 to PE 8 braid and a heavy leader. On lighter tackle you will not cast it properly and you risk breaking the rod.

How do I work a popper?

Rod tip low, a sharp downward sweep to make the cup dig and spit water, then wind up the slack and repeat. Vary the rhythm and leave the occasional long pause - a popper sitting still after a big splash is often what gets eaten.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

GT, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, kingfish and big queenfish. Fish the reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, and anywhere bait is being pushed up. First light over a tide change is the best window.

Should I upgrade the hooks and split rings?

On a GT popper, yes, and most serious anglers do it before the lure ever sees water. Hooks and rings are the cheapest components in the whole outfit and the ones that fail. Bring the lure in and we will match heavy trebles or inline singles and rings to it.

Why does through-wire construction matter?

Because a GT does not break hooks, it tears hook hangers out of plastic. A through-wire lure puts the load into a steel spine running the full length of the body, which is the only construction worth using for fish of that class.

Popper or stickbait?

A popper makes noise and works best in calm to moderate conditions and over structure where fish need calling up. A stickbait is subtler and often better in rough water or when fish have been cast at. Most people carry both.

Is it a current Noeby model?

No - the 9248 has been retired from their 2025 range, so what is in the market is legacy stock. The lure itself is unchanged.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt point does not set in a GT mouth.
