About this product

A chatterbait is the lure you reach for when the water is dirty. The hexagonal blade on the nose is hinged so that it knocks against the jig head on every beat of the retrieve, and the result is a hard, irregular vibration that a fish detects with its lateral line from well beyond the range at which it could see the lure. In clear water that is a bonus; in coloured water it is the whole thing.

Behind the blade sits a lead jig head with a wide-gap needle stinger hook and a hand-tied silicone skirt. The skirt does the second half of the job: it pulses on the retrieve and flares open when you pause, which is when a following fish usually commits.

It is made in five weights – 10.5, 14, 21, 28 and 35 g – with hook sizes from 3/0 upward. The lighter weights are freshwater bass and perch lures; the heavier ones will cast into wind and hold depth in a current.

In Tanzania this is mainly an inland lure – bass, tigerfish and Nile perch on the lakes, dams and rivers, particularly where the water is stained. Inshore it will take queenfish and small kingfish around structure. Add a soft plastic trailer on the hook for extra bulk and a slower fall.

Good to know

When would I use a chatterbait instead of a spinnerbait?

In dirty or stained water, and when you want to cover ground fast. A chatterbait puts out a harder, more irregular vibration than a spinnerbait blade, which is easier for a fish to home in on when it cannot see.

How do I fish it?

Mostly a straight, steady retrieve - the lure does the work. Add occasional pauses and let it fall; the skirt flares on the drop and that is when most fish take it. Bumping it off cover also triggers strikes.

Should I add a trailer?

Usually yes. A soft plastic paddle-tail or craw on the hook adds bulk, slows the fall and gives the fish a bigger target. It also changes the action slightly, which is useful on pressured fish.

Which weight should I choose?

10.5-14 g for calm freshwater and light tackle; 21-28 g for wind, depth or current; 35 g when you need distance. Heavier lures also run deeper on the same retrieve speed.

Where does it work in Tanzania?

What line should I use?

Braid with a fluorocarbon leader for feel and hook-setting power, or straight fluorocarbon if you are fishing clear water. The vibration comes back up the line, so braid lets you feel exactly what the lure is doing.

How do I look after it?

Rinse and dry it after use, and check the hook point and the blade hinge. The hinge is the part that wears - if the blade stops knocking cleanly against the head, the lure has lost most of its value.
