About this product

Trolling for wahoo, tuna and billfish happens at speeds that destroy ordinary lures. A diving minnow built for casting will blow out – lose its action and skate sideways – somewhere around six or seven knots. The Phoenix is designed to keep working at up to thirteen, and everything about the construction follows from that.

The body is high-density ABS built around an internal fish-bone rib framework, which stops the shell flexing and collapsing under water pressure at speed. Running through it is a solid heavy through-wire from the nose to the tail hook, so the load from a fish never passes into the plastic. The deep shovel lip drives the lure down; the UA ultra-antirust coating and internal holographic foil handle the sun and salt.

Two sizes are made. The 140F is 140 mm and 47 g, runs 0 to 7 m, and carries 1/0 hooks. The 180F is 180 mm and 94 g, runs 0 to 8 m, and carries 4/0 hooks. Both are floating and both carry two hooks, at the nose and tail. Colours run 003, 008, 016, 032, 036, 039, 040 and 041.

Off Dar es Salaam this belongs in a trolled spread along the reef edge, through the Mafia channel, over the offshore banks and out towards Latham Island – wahoo, kingfish, yellowfin, dorado and Spanish mackerel. Note that some supplier sheets describe this lure as slow-sinking; Noeby own specification is floating, which is what we have published.

Good to know

Is it floating or slow-sinking?

Floating. Some supplier sheets describe the 9737 as slow-sinking, but Noeby own specification for the Phoenix Offshore Deep Diver is floating in both sizes, and that is what we have published.

How fast can I actually troll it?

Up to 13 knots is the rating, which is unusually high for a diving lure and is the main reason to buy this one. Watch the rod tip: while it beats steadily the lure is swimming. If the beat goes erratic, back off.

140 or 180 mm?

The 140F for general trolling and lighter tackle; the 180F for big-game speeds and larger fish - it also carries much bigger 4/0 hooks. Many boats run both in the same spread at different distances.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

Wahoo, kingfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado, Spanish mackerel and cobia, trolled along the reef edge, through the Mafia channel, over the offshore banks and out towards Latham Island.

Why does the through-wire matter so much on a trolling lure?

Because the failure that loses a big fish is the hook hanger tearing out of the plastic, not the hook breaking. Solid wire from nose to tail means the load runs through steel. On anything trolled fast for big fish it is the specification to insist on.

Should I use a wire trace?

For wahoo and mackerel, yes - both will cut through mono in one bite. A short single-strand or heavy fluorocarbon trace between the leader and the lure is normal practice here. We stock both.

What knot should I use?

A loop knot, or a heavy snap or split ring at the tow point, so the lure can swing freely. A tight knot snugged onto the eye kills the action.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt or rusty point does not set.
