About this product

What a predator sees when it comes up under a popper is not really the splash – it is the disturbance the lure leaves behind it. The 9550 uses a bubble-chamber face that traps air on each pop and drags a trail of bubbles in the lure wake, which is a far more visible signature from below than the splash is from the side. It is why bubble-chamber poppers often out-fish plain cup faces in flat, clear water.

It is a floating lure, which means a pause leaves it sitting on the surface rather than sinking away, and a good number of strikes come in that stillness after a hard pop. The body is built for saltwater use and it is fished the same way as any popper – rod tip low, a sharp sweep to make the face dig and spit, wind up the slack, repeat, and vary the rhythm.

Colours run 112 through 119. Off Dar es Salaam this belongs on the reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, and over any bait being pushed to the surface – GT, kingfish, queenfish, tuna and big barracuda.

A note on sizes. Our supplier and Noeby China list the 9550 as 120 mm / 41 g and 190 mm / 129 g, with a 150 mm in between whose weight is not stated. Noeby South Africa publish the same code as 120 mm / 52 g and 150 mm / 94 g. The two Noeby sites disagree, so we have published the supplier figures and told you the other set exists rather than choosing silently. Why are there two sets of sizes?

Because Noeby own sites disagree. Their China listing and our supplier both give 120 mm / 41 g and 190 mm / 129 g; Noeby South Africa publish 120 mm / 52 g and 150 mm / 94 g for the same code. We have published the supplier figures and flagged the other rather than quietly picking one. Ask us and we will weigh the actual lure.

What is a bubble chamber and does it help?

The face traps air on each pop and releases it behind the lure, leaving a bubble trail in the wake. From below that trail is more visible than the splash, and in flat clear water a bubble-chamber popper will often out-fish a plain cup.

How do I work a popper?

Rod tip low, a sharp downward sweep so the face digs and spits water, then wind up the slack and repeat. Vary the rhythm, and leave the occasional long pause - a popper sitting still after a big splash is often what gets eaten.

What tackle do I need?

For the 120 mm, a 5000-6000 spinning outfit on a heavy lure rod. For the 190 mm at around 129 g, a dedicated popping rod and a 14000-18000 reel with PE 6-8.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

GT, kingfish, queenfish, tuna and big barracuda, on the reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, and anywhere bait is being pushed up. First light over a tide change is the window.

Should I upgrade the hooks and split rings?

On any popper that may meet a GT, yes. Noeby do not publish the hook brand or size, and hooks and rings are the cheapest components in the outfit. Bring the lure in and we will match heavy trebles or inline singles to it.

Popper or stickbait?

A popper calls fish up with noise, best in calm to moderate water over structure. A stickbait is subtler and often better in rough water or on fish that have been cast at. Most people carry both.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt point does not set.
