About this product

The failure that ends a trolling lure is not a broken hook – it is the hook hanger pulling out of the plastic. Noeby build the NBL9046 with a stainless steel wire running the full length of the body and additional internal plastic support around it, so the load from a big fish goes into the wire and out through the tow point rather than into the moulding.

It comes in three sizes with three running depths. The 120 mm at 32 g floats and works to about 4.5 m; the 140 mm at 52 g sinks and reaches about 6 m; the 160 mm at 73 g sinks and runs to about 9 m. Noeby rate the range to 12 knots, which is genuinely fast for a diving minnow and covers the speeds people troll for wahoo and kingfish.

Off Dar es Salaam this is the lure to put in a spread along the reef edge, through the Mafia channel, or off the drop-offs. Wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, yellowfin and dorado all take a trolled minnow at these sizes.

Good to know

Which size should I choose?

By the depth you want to fish. The 120 mm floats and runs to 4.5 m, good along shallow reef; the 140 mm sinks to about 6 m; the 160 mm reaches 9 m for deeper drop-offs. Bigger lures also filter out smaller fish, which is sometimes the point.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

Wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, yellowfin tuna, dorado and cobia, trolled along the reef edge, through the Mafia channel or over the offshore drop-offs.

How fast should I troll?

Anywhere up to the 12-knot rating. Watch the rod tip: while it is beating steadily the lure is swimming properly. When the beat goes erratic the lure has blown out and you are going too fast for that size.

Should I upgrade the hooks and split rings?

On a lure that will meet a serious fish, yes - it is cheap insurance. Straightened hooks and opened split rings are the commonest way a good fish is lost. Ask us what size suits.

Does the through-wire really matter?

Yes. On a lure without it, the hook hangers are screwed into plastic and a big fish tears them out. Through-wire means the load runs along a steel spine from the tow point to the tail. On anything trolled for big fish it is the specification to look for.

What knot should I use?

A loop knot, or a snap to the split ring, so the lure can swing freely. A tight knot snugged onto the tow eye kills the action.

Does colour matter?

Less than depth and speed. Natural silver and blue in clear water and bright sun; darker or brighter patterns in murky water and low light. Carry a couple and change if nothing is happening.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt or rusty point does not set.
