About this product

Match the hatch is the oldest advice in fishing and it is right more often than not. Most of the small baitfish that queenfish, snapper, tilapia and bass eat are around four to five centimetres long, which is why a 4.5 cm soft plastic ends up being the size people reach for most.

The T-tail is a flat paddle hanging below the body. Water pressure makes it beat side to side, and the soft plastic means it starts working at a slow retrieve rather than needing speed – which matters, because slow is usually what catches.

Ice silver is a high-reflectivity finish rather than a colour in the ordinary sense. In clear water and good light it flashes on every beat of the tail, which is precisely what a small baitfish looks like from behind.

Why is 4.5 cm the size to start with?

Because most of the small baitfish inshore and freshwater predators eat are around that length. Matching the size of what the fish are already feeding on is the single most reliable adjustment you can make.

How do I rig it?

On a light jig head, nose first, threaded along the body with the point out through the back so the bait sits straight. A crooked soft plastic spins and twists your line. Drop-shot and Texas rigs also work. Jig heads are sold separately.

What jig head weight suits it?

3 to 10 g. Use the lightest head that still reaches the fish - a heavy head kills the tail action and makes the bait drop too fast.
