About this product
Luminous Squid Fishing Lure – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.
A squid jig looks strange until you understand what it is for. Squid have no jaw to set a hook into – they catch prey by wrapping their tentacles around it and pulling it in. So a squid jig has no hook at all: it carries a crown of fine barbs pointing upward and backward around the tail, which slide into the tentacles as the squid grips and hold it as you lift.
Everything else about the lure is designed to make a squid commit. The body is shaped and finished like a prawn, with 3D eyes, because squid hunt by sight and are surprisingly selective. The tail is luminous – charge it under a torch for a few seconds and it glows for several minutes underwater, which is what makes it work at night when squid come to the surface around lights.
Fishing it is unhurried. Cast, let it sink, then lift the rod in two or three sharp upward flicks so the jig darts and rises, and let it sink back on a slack line. Squid take on the drop, and the bite feels like nothing at all – just sudden weight. Lift steadily; never strike hard, because tentacles tear.
Around Dar es Salaam, squid come in around jetty and boat lights at night, and along the reef edges. The same jigs also take reef fish – snapper, grouper and emperor will all eat one on the drop.
