About this product

The reason a frog lure exists is access. There are places in every lake and river where fish sit because nothing can reach them – matted weed, lily pads, floating vegetation. A hard lure with trebles is fouled within a metre. A soft frog with its hook points tucked against the body slides straight over all of it, and when something comes up through the weed to take it, the strike is the most dramatic thing in fishing.

This one is 10.5 cm and 12 g with a soft silicone body and 3D eyes. The softness is functional, not cosmetic: when a fish clamps down, the body squashes flat and the hook points that were lying against it come clear and find purchase. A hard body would hold them away from the fish.

It fishes three ways. A slow steady retrieve makes the legs kick; sharp downward pulls make it pop and spit water; rhythmic twitches walk it side to side. All three work, and which one is right changes by the day.

In Tanzania this is an inland lure – the weedy margins of the lakes, dams and rivers for bass, tigerfish, Nile perch and catfish. The one thing to get right is the strike: wait until you feel the weight of the fish on the line, not the splash, then sweep the rod hard.

Good to know

When do I set the hook?

Not at the splash. Wait until you feel the weight of the fish on the line - a fish taking a frog often misses or takes only the back of it, and striking at the sound pulls the lure away. Then sweep hard and keep winding.

Is it weedless?

Largely, yes. The hook points lie against the soft body so the lure slides over weed, pads and floating growth. It is designed to be fished where treble-hooked lures cannot go.

What tackle do I need?

A medium-heavy rod with backbone and braided line, not mono. You need power to pull a fish straight out of weed and braid to cut through it. Straight braid with no leader is normal for frog fishing.

How should I retrieve it?

Three ways, all worth trying: a slow steady wind so the legs kick, sharp downward pulls so it pops, or rhythmic twitches that walk it side to side. Pause it in gaps and holes - that is where strikes come.

Where does it work in Tanzania?

The weedy margins of the lakes, dams and rivers - bass, tigerfish, Nile perch and catfish. Anywhere surface vegetation stops other lures being fished is where a frog earns its place.

Does it fill with water?

Over time, through the hook holes. Squeeze it out after each fish and it will keep sitting high. When it will no longer float properly, replace it - frogs are consumables.

Can I use it in the sea?

Around mangrove edges and weedy creek margins it will take queenfish and small kingfish, but it is really a freshwater lure. There is little surface vegetation on the open coast to justify it.

How do I look after it?

Rinse, squeeze out any water, and dry it before storing. Check the hook points and the body for tears at the hook holes.
