The Nonsuch 8000 is Noeby big workhorse overhead reel: a lever-drag conventional on a full metal, seawater-resistant body with a sealed drag system and stainless bearings. There is nothing clever about it, and that is rather the point. Offshore fishing breaks reels through corrosion and through frame flex under heavy drag, and metal construction with a sealed drag stack is the honest answer to both.
The gearing is 4.5:1, which is deliberately low. A high-geared reel is pleasant on the surface and useless at 100 metres with a heavy fish on it; low gearing multiplies your cranking torque, which is what you actually need for deep drops, heavy jigs, and lifting a fish off structure. The spool is deep, holding around 370 metres of 0.37 mm mono.
Off Dar es Salaam it suits trolling, deep bottom fishing and heavy jigging – the Mafia channel, the offshore pinnacles and banks, and out towards Latham Island. Amberjack, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, big grouper, kingfish and wahoo are all within its range.
One honest note about the drag figure. Noeby publish the Nonsuch range only on a site we cannot currently reach, and their dealers disagree: a European dealer lists a single-speed Nonsuch Conventional 8000 at 20 kg of drag and 605 g, while another lists a two-speed CR 8000 at 30 kg. Our supplier quotes 25 to 30 kg for this reel. That is too wide a range to publish as fact, so we have listed the sourced figures and flagged the rest.
