Vertical jigging punishes a reel in a specific way. It is not one long steady pull but hundreds of short, hard ones, and then a fight in which the drag heats up fast and has to stay honest. Reels that are fine for trolling often feel rough after a season of jigging, because the frame has worked and the drag has glazed.
The Nonsuch JG is built against that. The frame and side plates are machined from a single piece of aluminium rather than assembled from castings, so there is nothing to loosen. The drag is a carbon stack with deliberately oversized discs – Noeby own description points to heat displacement as the reason, and that is exactly right: a bigger disc area spreads the same heat over more surface, so the drag pressure you set at the start of a run is still what you have at the end. Eight ball bearings and a roller carry the gearing, one more than the heavier Nonsuch conventional reels, which is about smoothness under repeated stroke rather than raw strength.
The 1500R is the lighter of the two JG sizes: 15 kg of maximum drag at 392 g, geared 5.2:1, with 500 metres of PE 2 or 350 of PE 3 on the spool. That is a good match for the reef edges and moderate depths off Dar es Salaam, for amberjack, grouper, snapper, jobfish and kingfish.
The handle is a single power handle with a soft machined EVA knob. Like all overhead reels, the hand is fixed at manufacture rather than reversible – the R denotes right-hand retrieve, and a left-hand version is a separate item.
