Highlights

A low gear for when you need one

Two speeds: 4.5:1 to work a lure or a jig, and 2.1:1 to grind a heavy fish up from depth when your arms have had enough. That gearbox is the whole point of a CR.

Two-speed gearbox

4.5:1 high for retrieve, 2.1:1 low for torque - shift down and winch rather than fighting the fish on one gear.

CNC-machined aluminium body

Full metal construction for a reel that will see very heavy drag settings.

7+1 stainless bearings

Corrosion-resistant bearings throughout for offshore use.

Lever drag

A lever gives you repeatable, pre-set drag positions rather than guessing at a star wheel mid-fight.

Product description

About this product

Cr 6000 Conventional Reel – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A two-speed reel exists for one situation: the fish is beaten but heavy, it is 80 metres down, and you no longer have the arm to crank it in high gear. You shift into low, the retrieve rate halves and the torque roughly doubles, and you grind it up. It is the single most useful feature on an offshore reel and it is what separates the Nonsuch CR from the JG jigging reels.

The CR 6000 is geared 4.5:1 in high and 2.1:1 in low, with a CNC-machined aluminium body, 7+1 stainless bearings and a lever drag. A lever drag is worth having for the same practical reason: the strike and full positions are set in advance, so you can move between them mid-fight and get the same pressure every time, instead of guessing at a star wheel with a fish running.

Around Dar es Salaam this is a trolling, deep-drop and heavy jigging reel – the Mafia channel, the offshore pinnacles and banks, and out towards Latham Island. Amberjack, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, big grouper, kingfish and wahoo are all within its range.

One honest note about the drag figure. Noeby publish the Nonsuch range only on a site we cannot currently reach. Their dealers disagree: one lists this reel at 30 kg of maximum drag with the two-speed gearbox, another lists a single-speed Nonsuch Conventional 6000 at 20 kg and 571 g. That is too wide a gap to pick a side, so we have published the two-speed 30 kg specification our supplier provides and flagged it. Ask us before ordering and we will confirm exactly which reel is in the shop.

Questions

Good to know

Is the drag 20 kg or 30 kg?

We cannot settle it, and we would rather tell you. Noeby publish the Nonsuch range only on a site we cannot reach. One dealer lists a two-speed CR 6000 at 30 kg; another lists a single-speed Nonsuch Conventional 6000 at 20 kg and 571 g. These may be two different reels sharing a size code. Ask us and we will confirm what is physically in the shop before you order.

What is the point of a two-speed reel?

Low gear. When a heavy fish is beaten but deep, you shift down: the retrieve rate halves and the cranking torque roughly doubles, so you can grind it up rather than fighting it on one gear until your arms give out.

How is the CR different from the Nonsuch JG?

The CR is the heavy, geared line: two speeds, 7+1 bearings, capacities quoted in mono, built for trolling and deep cranking as much as jigging. The JG is single-speed at 5.2:1, lighter, 8+1 bearings, carbon drag and braid-only capacities - built around one technique, working a jig.

What is a lever drag and why does it matter?

The drag is set by a lever with marked positions rather than a star wheel. You pre-set strike and full, then move between them mid-fight and get the same pressure every time. On a star drag you are guessing, with a fish running.

What rod should I pair it with?

A casting jigging rod or a short trolling rod, depending on how you fish it. Our CRONY Amazing Heavy Jigging AHJC561 or a CRONY Tuna Warrior trolling rod both suit an overhead reel of this class.

Where would I use it around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the Mafia channel, the pinnacles and banks, and out towards Latham Island. Amberjack, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, big grouper, kingfish and wahoo.

Left or right hand?

Overhead reel handles are fixed at manufacture, so the reel is built in a left- or right-hand version. Tell us which you need when you order.

How do I look after it?

Rinse with fresh water after every trip - gently, not with a jet - and dry it before storage. Back the drag lever right off so the stack is not left compressed, and rinse around the handle and lever rather than just over the frame.
