Snap and swivel combined

Change lures in seconds without cutting the line, and keep the line from twisting.

High-strength carbon steel

Strong enough to be the connection on a lure that meets a real fish.

Four size combinations

8+0, 7+1, 6+1 and 3+3, to match different line and lure weights.

Corrosion resistant

Finished for saltwater use.

Product description

About this product

Anything that spins or rolls in the water – a spoon, a spinner, some minnows, a soft plastic rigged slightly crooked – transmits that rotation up the line. Left alone it accumulates, and after an hour you have a spool full of coils that tangle every time you cast. A swivel breaks that chain by letting the lure turn without the line following.

The snap solves the other problem: changing lures. Cutting and retying a knot every time you want to try something different is slow enough that most people stop doing it, which means they fish the wrong lure for longer than they should. A snap makes the change a five-second job.

These are carbon steel, in four size combinations – 8+0, 7+1, 6+1 and 3+3 – to match different line strengths and lure weights.

One caution worth knowing. A snap swivel is a mechanical connection and therefore a potential weak point, so use one rated well above your line strength, and check it after every good fish. For very big fish – GT, tuna, marlin – most anglers tie the leader directly to the lure or use a heavy solid ring instead.

Questions

Good to know

Do I really need a swivel?

If you fish spoons, spinners or anything that rotates, yes - without one your line will twist badly within an hour. For lures that swim rather than spin, a swivel is optional, and many anglers prefer a direct knot.

Where should the swivel go?

Between the main line and the leader, typically 50 cm to a metre above the lure. Putting it right at the lure adds visible hardware at the business end and can affect the action of a small lure.

Is a snap swivel strong enough for big fish?

It depends on the size. Choose one rated well above your line strength and check it after every good fish. For GT, tuna and other very big fish, most anglers tie the leader directly to the lure or use a heavy solid ring instead of a snap.

What do the size numbers mean?

They are the manufacturer own size combinations for the snap and the swivel elements. Our supplier does not publish breaking strains against them. Tell us your line class and we will match a size for you.

Will it affect how my lure swims?

A large snap on a small lure can. If a lure stops working properly after you add one, either go to a smaller snap or tie directly to the lure and put the swivel further up the line.

How do I open and close it?

By hand - the snap is designed to be opened with a thumbnail. If a snap has become stiff with salt, replace it rather than forcing it; a strained snap can fail under load.

Can I use it for bait fishing too?

Yes. A snap swivel is standard on running ledger and paternoster rigs, where it lets you change traces and weights quickly.

How do I look after terminal tackle in salt water?

Rinse and dry everything before it goes back in the box. Salt left on swivels and snaps seizes them, and a swivel that no longer turns is worse than no swivel at all. Keep small items in a sealed compartment box.
