The bullet sinker is the piece of tackle that makes weedless soft-plastic fishing possible. Its cone shape noses through weed, timber and coral rubble rather than wedging in it, and because it slides freely on the line above the hook, a fish picking up the bait feels much less resistance than it would with a fixed weight.
These are cast in an antimony alloy rather than plain lead. Antimony hardens lead considerably, which does two useful things: the sinker deforms less when it strikes rock, and it transmits bottom contact more clearly up the line – so you can actually feel what your bait is crawling over.
Three weights are made – 14 g, 21 g and 28 g – in a silver finish. Choose by cover and depth: the lightest for shallow cover and a slow fall, heavier for depth, current and punching through matted weed.
They work on all four standard soft-plastic rigs. Texas: sinker on the line, then the hook, bait rigged weedless. Free and Florida rigs vary the weight attachment; Carolina puts the sinker above a swivel with a leader down to the hook, so the bait swims free behind it.
