Highlights

Weight is the point

Forty-two grams is a lot of jig head. It is there to hold bottom in a tide that would sweep a 10 g head off the mark before it ever got down.

42 g

Heavy enough to reach bottom and stay there in deep water and hard current.

Deep water use

Where the fish are below a running tide, weight is the only thing that gets a bait to them.

Balanced head

Designed so the bait sits level and swims rather than dragging nose-down.

Takes large soft plastics

A head this weight is matched to big paddle-tails and shads.

Product description

About this product

Mustad Tomahawk Jig Head – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Jig head weight is not a preference, it is arithmetic. A soft plastic on a 10 g head in 60 metres of water with a tide running will never reach the bottom – the current sweeps it away as it falls and you fish the whole drift at an angle. A 42 g head goes down near vertical and stays on the mark. That is the entire argument for a head this heavy.

It is matched to big soft plastics – large paddle-tails and shads – and to the fish that eat them: grouper, snapper, jobfish, kingfish and amberjack on the offshore reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs around Dar es Salaam and the Mafia channel.

Fish it as you would a jig. Drop it, let it hit bottom, then lift and drop the rod tip so the bait rises and falls a metre or two off the structure. Most takes come on the drop, so keep in touch with the line as it falls.

One honest note on the name. Tomahawk does not appear in Mustad jig-head range, which runs to twenty-two products under names such as Elite Bullet, Grip-Pin Ned, Impact Spring Lock, Shad/Darter and Ball Head – none of them Tomahawk. If this head carries Mustad branding it will match one of those codes on the packet. Ask us and we will read it off before you order, and tell you the hook size and wire gauge with it.

Questions

Good to know

Is Tomahawk a Mustad jig head?

Not one we can find. Mustad jig-head range runs to twenty-two products - Elite Bullet, Grip-Pin Ned, Impact Spring Lock, Shad/Darter, Ball Head and others - and none is called Tomahawk. If your head carries Mustad branding it will match one of those codes on the packet. Ask us and we will read it off.

Why would I need a head this heavy?

To reach bottom. In deep water with a tide running, a light jig head is swept off the mark as it falls and never fishes the structure at all. Forty-two grams drops near vertical and stays where you dropped it.

How do I fish it?

Drop it, let it hit bottom, then lift and drop the rod tip so the bait rises and falls a metre or two above the structure. Most takes come on the drop - keep in touch with the line as it falls and strike if it stops early.

What size soft plastic suits it?

A large one. A 42 g head on a small bait looks wrong and falls too fast; match it to big paddle-tails and shads of 5 to 8 inches. We stock soft plastics in those sizes.

What rod and line do I need?

A jigging or heavy boat rod and braid. Braid matters here - you cannot feel a bite at depth through the stretch of monofilament, and most of the bites are on the drop.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Grouper, snapper, jobfish, kingfish and amberjack on the offshore reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, and in the Mafia channel on a running tide.

What hook is fitted to it?

Our supplier does not publish the hook size, wire gauge or brand. Ask us and we will look at what is in the shop before you order - the hook is the part that matters most on a jig head.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water and dry it, and check the hook point with a thumbnail - jig heads spend their lives bouncing off rock and coral and the point blunts quickly. A file or a small hook sharpener is worth carrying.
