Highlights

Towelling cuffs are not a detail here

A keeper-s forearms sweat and it runs down into the glove. Cloth-lined cuffs absorb some of it and then stop; towelling keeps taking it up. Over a long innings in Dar es Salaam humidity, that is the difference between gloves that stay usable and gloves that are wet inside by lunch.

Towelling-lined cuffs

Absorbent lining that keeps taking up sweat, rather than saturating early.

All-leather palm

Real leather with a rubber grip facing, which holds a ball when your hands are wet.

Natural cup and palm

A pre-formed pocket, so the glove presents a cup for the ball to settle into.

Youth and adult

Senior sizes, for keepers past junior cricket.

About this product

League Wicket Keeping Gloves – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The SG League is a step up from the Club keeping glove, and the difference that matters most in this climate is the cuff lining.

That sounds trivial and is not. A wicketkeeper crouches and stands several hundred times in a session with their forearms above their hands, and sweat runs down the forearm into the cuff of the glove. Cloth lining absorbs a certain amount and then saturates. Towelling keeps taking it up, and it keeps the inside of the glove drier for far longer. On a hot, humid afternoon here that is the difference between gloves that remain usable and gloves that are squelching by the drinks break.

The rest is what you want in a keeping glove. An all-leather palm with a rubber grip facing over it – leather grips when wet, which PVC does not. Natural cup-and-palm construction, so the glove sits open with a formed pocket and the ball settles into it rather than having to be trapped.

It comes in youth and adult only, which tells you where SG place it: a glove for a keeper past junior cricket who is keeping regularly.

The webbing between thumb and index finger is the part that fails on any keeping glove, because it takes the load on every one-handed take. Check it and have it restitched before it tears.

Wear chamois or padded cotton inners. A thin inner is not enough for the number of balls a keeper takes.

Questions

Good to know

What is the difference between the League and the Club keeping gloves?

The cuff lining and the size range. League has towelling-lined cuffs rather than cloth, which stays absorbent far longer in a hot session, and it comes in youth and adult only. Both have all-leather palms and cup-and-palm construction.

What is cup-and-palm construction?

The two ways a keeping glove is built. A natural cup-and-palm glove has a pre-formed cup shape sewn into the palm so the glove sits open and ready, and the ball settles into it. It is the traditional and generally preferred construction - the alternative, a flat glove, has to be closed by the hands rather than presenting a pocket.

Do I need inner gloves under keeping gloves?

Yes, always, and chamois or padded cotton inners rather than thin ones. A keeper takes several hundred deliveries into the hands in a session, and the inner is what absorbs that. It also soaks up the sweat that would otherwise destroy the glove-s lining, and unlike the gloves it can be washed.

Why does the cuff lining matter?

Because sweat runs down a keeper-s forearms into the glove. Cloth lining saturates; towelling keeps taking it up. In Dar es Salaam humidity that decides whether the gloves are still usable in the second hour.

Which part wears out first?

The webbing between thumb and index finger, which takes the load on every one-handed take. It tears rather than wearing gradually - check it and have it restitched early.

How do I stop keeping gloves smelling?

Take them out of the bag the moment you get home, pull the inners out, and let both dry in the shade with the gloves opened up. Keeping gloves are the worst item in a cricket bag for this, because they are wet inside after every session. In this humidity a closed bag ruins them within weeks.

How should protective equipment fit?

Snug enough that it does not move when you do, loose enough not to restrict you. Pads should let you run; gloves should let you grip without gaps at the fingertips; a helmet should not rock when you shake your head. Kit that moves on impact is protecting the wrong place at the wrong moment.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
