The SF Bouncer is Stanford-s white leather ball, made as a four-piece with a naturally seasoned inner core.

Four-piece construction is a specification worth looking for. A cheap ball is made in two pieces – two moulded leather cups stitched together around the equator. A four-piece ball is built from four leather quarters, stitched in two planes, which means the leather is under more even tension and the ball holds its round shape far longer as it is hit. It also gives a better-defined seam, because the quarters meet cleanly rather than being forced into shape.

White balls are used for limited-overs and floodlit cricket. The reason is contrast: against coloured clothing and under lights, a red ball is difficult to pick up, while a white one stands out. White balls do have a known characteristic – they get dirty and lose their visible shine faster than red ones, which is why they are changed more often in professional one-day cricket.

Alum-tanned leather is the standard for serious balls. Treated with aluminium salts rather than vegetable tannins, it stays firmer, holds its shape under impact, and does not go soft in damp – all of which matter in a humid climate.

What is the difference between a two-piece and a four-piece ball?

Why are cricket balls different colours?

Visibility against the background. Red is the traditional ball for the longer format, played in daylight against a white sightscreen. White is used for limited-overs and floodlit cricket, where players wear coloured clothing and a red ball would be hard to pick up. Pink was developed for day-night matches - it stays visible under lights without the white ball-s problem of disappearing against the players.

Why does the seam matter so much?

It is the only thing on the ball a bowler can use. The raised stitching catches the air asymmetrically, which is what produces swing, and it grips the pitch to produce seam movement off the surface. A ball with a flattened seam is a dead ball for a bowler, which is why seam quality is what separates a good ball from a cheap one.

What does a cricket ball weigh?

Under the Laws of Cricket, a mens ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm. A womens ball is 140 to 151 g, and an under-13 junior ball 133 to 144 g. Red balls are used for the longer format, white for limited-overs and floodlit cricket, and pink for day-night matches.

Do white balls behave differently from red?

They are made the same way but they show dirt sooner and lose their visible shine faster, which is why professional one-day cricket changes them mid-innings. For club cricket that matters much less than the visibility gain under lights.

How do I look after a leather ball?

Keep it dry and out of the sun. Wipe the dirt off after use and store it somewhere cool - heat dries the leather and hardens it, and a ball left in the sun on a hot day goes hard and loses its seam early. Never soak a leather ball; if it gets wet, dry it slowly in the shade rather than in the sun.

Which colour should a club buy?

Red if you play in daylight whites, white if you play limited-overs cricket in coloured clothing or under lights. Most clubs end up with both.
