This is the heavy grade of tennis ball for cricket, in yellow.
Weight is the entire specification on a tennis cricket ball, and heavy versus light is a real decision rather than a preference. A heavy ball is weighted so that it flies rather than floats, carries off the bat when struck properly, and bounces off concrete or hard ground the way a cricket ball does. That means a bowler can bowl at genuine pace and a batsman has to play a real shot, and the game feels like cricket.
A light ball does none of those things. It hangs in the air, it stops on the bat, and any breeze moves it – which for young children is exactly right and for adults is frustrating.
This is the grade for teenagers and adults, on the surfaces most street and compound cricket is played on. It is also the ball taped-ball cricket starts from: wrap tape around it and a bowler can swing it substantially, which is a whole variant of the game with its own skills.
Yellow is the more visible colour in most conditions, particularly in fading light and against dark ground – which is when a lot of cricket gets played here.
