This is Stanford-s County ball in pink leather: alum-tanned leather over a moulded cork and rubber centre, with a fine linen machine-stitched cover and a polyurethane finish.

The pink ball is a genuinely modern invention and it exists for one reason. Test and first-class cricket wanted to be played under lights, and neither existing ball worked: a red ball becomes almost invisible under floodlights, and a white one – which works well in coloured-clothing cricket – is very hard to see against white clothing and a white sightscreen, and gets dirty too fast for a long innings. Pink stays visible in daylight, at dusk and under lights, and holds its colour longer than white.

The construction is conventional: an alum-tanned leather cover, chosen because it holds its shape and resists damp, over a moulded cork and rubber centre. The PU finish is what keeps the shine on for longer, which matters for swing.

One thing we should flag. Stanford publish the County ball in red and white on their own site; pink is sold through distributor channels rather than appearing in their published range. The ball is genuine and the construction is as described; we simply cannot point you at a manufacturer page confirming the pink variant. If that matters to you, ask us before ordering.

Why is there a note about the pink colour?

Because Stanford-s own published range for the County ball is red and white. Pink County balls are sold through distributor channels but do not appear on the manufacturer-s site, so we flag it rather than imply Stanford list it. The ball itself is genuine.

Why are cricket balls different colours?

Visibility against the background. Red is the traditional ball for the longer format in daylight. White is used for limited-overs and floodlit cricket against coloured clothing. Pink was developed for day-night matches - it stays visible under lights without the white ball-s problem of disappearing against the players and the surroundings.

When would I actually use a pink ball?

Under floodlights, or in a match that starts in daylight and finishes at dusk. It is the only ball that stays visible across that transition. For a normal daytime club match, red is the conventional choice.

Does a pink ball play differently?

It has a slightly heavier lacquer to keep its colour, which means it tends to keep its shine and swing a little longer, and it is generally reckoned to do more in the evening session. At club level the difference is modest.

What does a cricket ball weigh?

Under the Laws of Cricket, a mens ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm. A womens ball is 140 to 151 g, and an under-13 junior ball 133 to 144 g. Red balls are used for the longer format, white for limited-overs and floodlit cricket, and pink for day-night matches.

How do I look after a leather ball?

Keep it dry and out of the sun. Wipe the dirt off after use and store it somewhere cool - heat dries the leather and hardens it, and a ball left in the sun goes hard and loses its seam early. If it gets wet, dry it slowly in the shade.

Do we need special sightscreens for a pink ball?

Black sightscreens are used for pink-ball cricket at professional level, because a pink ball against a white screen is hard to pick up. For club cricket, be aware of it if you are playing into the evening.
