2.8 mm is the club weight

2.8 mm twine

Solid club and school weight - heavier than a 2.5 mm light net, lighter than a 3 mm heavy-duty one.

Resists rot and water well, which matters through masika. UV is what it does not resist.

Full size

UV is the enemy

Not shooting practice. A net left up permanently here starts failing in its second season.

Product description

About this product

Soccer Goal Nets – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

A full-size soccer goal net made from 2.8 mm polypropylene twine.

Twine thickness is the specification that matters on a net, and it is the one most listings leave out. It is simply how thick each strand is: 2.5 mm is a light club net, 3 mm and above is heavy-duty, and 2.8 mm sits between them – the sensible weight for club, school and serious training use, where a net takes real shooting but does not need to survive a professional stadium.

Polypropylene is the right material. It resists rot and does not absorb water, which through masika and vuli matters more than it would in a dry climate – a net that soaks up water gets heavy, sags and stays damp.

What polypropylene does not resist is ultraviolet light, and that is the single thing that will finish this net. Sustained tropical sun breaks down the polymer chains, and a net left up year-round in Dar will go brittle and start failing in its second season regardless of how little football is played into it. If you can take it down between matches, do; if you cannot, budget for replacement rather than being surprised by it.

Fitting: tension the top evenly first, then peg the bottom out behind the goal line rather than pulling it tight to the crossbar. Too close and the ball rebounds straight out; too loose and the net drags and tears.

And repair small holes as soon as you see them. Tie each broken strand to its neighbours with the same twine, matching the mesh – a hole in a net grows fast.

Questions

Good to know

What size is a full-size goal?

7.32 m wide by 2.44 m high - eight yards by eight feet - measured between the inside of the posts and from the ground to the underside of the crossbar. That is the Law 1 figure and it has not changed in well over a century.

How do I stop a net sagging?

Tension it evenly along the top first, then peg the bottom out behind the goal line rather than pulling it tight to the crossbar. A net pegged too close to the goal line sends the ball straight back out and looks wrong; pegged too loose it drags on the ground and tears.

What is the number one thing that destroys nets here?

UV, not football. Sustained tropical sun breaks down polypropylene faster than any amount of shooting practice. A net left up permanently in this climate will go brittle and start failing in the second season. Take it down between uses if you can, or accept a shorter life and budget for it.

What does the twine thickness mean?

How thick each strand of the net is, in millimetres. Thicker twine is stronger and lasts longer, and it also looks heavier and sits differently. 2.5 mm is a light club net, 3 mm and above is a heavy-duty one. 2.8 mm sits in between - solid for club and school use.

How do I repair a hole?

Small holes are worth fixing rather than replacing the net. Use a length of the same twine or strong nylon cord and tie off each broken strand to its neighbours, matching the mesh pattern. Do it as soon as you notice it - a small hole in a net grows quickly.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat raises the pressure inside an inflated ball, so a ball pumped in the cool morning and left on a sunlit pitch is harder by the afternoon - inflate toward the lower end of the range. UV degrades stitching, PU covers and net twine, so keep balls and nets out of prolonged direct sun when they are not in use. And dry kit properly rather than sealing it damp in a bag.

Can I leave a goal outside?

A steel or aluminium goal frame can live outdoors, but it will corrode faster here than inland, particularly near the coast - check the fixings and the welds each season. The net is the part that really suffers; take that in.
