Two-Way Ball Pump with 5 Inflation Needles

Soccer

A dual-action ball pump with five needles. Two-way means it moves air on both the push and the pull stroke - roughly twice the air per stroke, so a size 5 ball takes about half the effort. The five needles matter because needles bend and get lost.

Highlights

Air on both strokes

Half the strokes for the same ball. A real feature.

Dual action

Moves air on the push and the pull, so a size 5 ball inflates in about half the strokes.

Five needles included

Needles bend and go missing, and a pump with no needle is an ornament.

Wet the needle first

A dry needle tears the valve, and a torn valve cannot be repaired. This is the big one.

Use a gauge

Feel is how balls get over-inflated. The difference is not obvious to the hand.

Product description

About this product

A dual-action hand pump supplied with five inflation needles.

Two-way, or dual-action, is the feature worth having and it is a genuine one rather than marketing. A single-action pump only moves air on the down stroke; a dual-action pump moves it on both the push and the pull. That is roughly twice the air per stroke, which on a size 5 football is the difference between forty strokes and twenty.

Five needles sounds like packaging generosity and is actually the most useful thing in the box. Needles bend when a ball is knocked while the pump is in it, and they vanish from kit bags reliably. A pump with no needle is an ornament.

The one piece of advice that saves more balls than anything else: wet the needle before you put it in. A drop of water, glycerine or valve oil is enough. A dry needle tears the rubber valve as it goes through, and a torn valve means a ball that will not hold air and cannot be repaired. It is the commonest way people ruin a brand new ball.

And inflate with a gauge rather than by feel. A size 5 football takes 0.6 to 1.1 bar under the Laws, and 0.8 to 1.0 is the sensible target – but the difference between correct and badly over-inflated is not something your hand can judge. If the pump has no gauge, a separate one costs very little and will pay for itself the first time.

We are not publishing a brand name for this pump, because the name on the listing has no manufacturer behind it, and it adds nothing.

Questions

Good to know

What pressure should a size 5 football be?

The Laws allow 0.6 to 1.1 bar - 8.5 to 15.6 psi - at sea level, and most manufacturers recommend the middle of that, around 0.8 to 1.0 bar or 11.6 to 14.5 psi. The target is usually printed next to the valve, and that figure beats any general advice. Inflate to the lower end if the ball will sit in the sun, because heat raises the pressure.

Why is over-inflation such a common mistake?

Because people pump until the ball feels right rather than using a gauge, and an electric pump will happily run past the correct pressure. A hard ball is not a better ball - it loses the give that lets you control it, it stings the foot and the head, and the constant tension stretches the bladder and pulls the seams apart. An over-inflated ball ages in weeks rather than seasons.

Any tips for using a pump needle?

Wet the needle before you put it in - a drop of water, glycerine or valve oil is enough. A dry needle tears the rubber valve as it goes in, and a torn valve means a ball that will not hold air and cannot be repaired. This is the single commonest way people ruin a new ball.

Why does a two-way pump matter?

A dual-action pump moves air on both the push and the pull stroke, so you get roughly twice the air per stroke. A size 5 ball inflates in about half the strokes of a single-action pump. It is a genuine feature rather than a marketing one.

What are the different needles for?

Different valve types. Most sports balls take a standard needle, but a spare or two matters because needles bend and get lost, and a pump with no needle is an ornament. Keep one in the ball bag.

How do I know when the ball is at the right pressure?

With a gauge, not by feel. Feel is how balls get over-inflated - the difference between a correct ball and a badly over-inflated one is not obvious to the hand. If the pump has no gauge, a separate pressure gauge costs very little and will save you balls.

How should I look after a ball?

Deflate it slightly if it is going into storage for a long time, so the bladder and seams are not under constant tension. Wipe mud off rather than leaving it to dry on, because grit works into the seams. Keep it out of prolonged sun, and never leave it in a car boot. Check the pressure before every session rather than once a month.
