A heavy-duty rubber mat that lies on the floor in front of the board, marking the throwing line and protecting the floor from dropped darts.

The throw line is the more useful of those two jobs. The official distance is 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board, and the commonest setup error is measuring from the wall instead – a board with a surround stands proud of it, and the result is a throw that is quietly too long. A mat with the distance printed on it removes the argument, and removes the nightly business of finding the tape measure or trusting a strip of masking tape that somebody has scuffed.

Floor protection matters more on the tiled and polished concrete floors common here than it does on carpet. A dropped dart on tile chips the tile and hooks the point; on rubber it does neither.

Rubber also stops the mat sliding, which a fabric one will not – and a mat that slides has moved your oche without telling you.

How do I set the board up correctly?

The bullseye goes 1.73 m from the floor, and the throwing line sits 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board - measured to the board face, not the wall, because a board with a surround stands proud of it. Cross-check with the diagonal: 2.93 m from the centre of the bull to the back of the oche. If the diagonal does not match, one of your other two measurements is wrong.

How long is the mat?

We are not quoting a figure, because WIN.MAX have not documented the dimensions to us and we would rather leave a gap than invent one. Ask us and we will measure the stock before you order - worth doing if your room is tight.

Why does the floor need protecting?

Because on tile or polished concrete a dropped dart chips the floor and hooks its own point. Both are permanent. On rubber, neither happens.

Will it slide?

Rubber grips considerably better than a fabric mat, which is important - a mat that creeps has moved your throwing line without telling you. Check it occasionally on a polished floor.

Do I still need to measure?

Measure once when you set the board up, to confirm the mat lands the throw line in the right place relative to the board face. After that the mat holds the position for you.

Can I use it outdoors?

Rubber handles a covered veranda fine. Do not leave it in direct sun for months - UV hardens rubber and it eventually cracks. Bring it in or keep it shaded.

How do I clean it?

Sweep it and wipe it with water and mild soap. Avoid solvents and petrol-based cleaners, which degrade rubber.

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.
