Highlights

Weight forward, shaft flexible

Head-heavy rackets hit harder because the mass arrives at the shuttle rather than sitting in your hand. What usually stops a club player using one is a stiff shaft that needs a fast arm to load. The Play pairs the head-heavy balance with a flexible shaft, which is what makes it work for a developing player.

Head-heavy balance

Mass carried in the frame head, which is where a smash gets its weight from.

Hi-Flex shaft

Loads and releases without needing a fast, powerful swing - it does some of the work for you.

Aero+Box frame

Aerodynamic on one side and boxed on the other: less drag through the swing, more stability at contact.

4U, G5

80-84 g unstrung on the smallest common grip - light and quick in the hand.

Product description

About this product

Play Badminton Racket High – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The Astrox 77 Play is the entry-level member of Yonex-s Astrox family, and the Astrox family exists for one purpose: to put the weight at the front of the racket so the shuttle gets hit harder.

That is the honest physics of a smash. A head-heavy racket carries more mass at the point of contact, so more energy arrives at the shuttle for the same swing. The catch on the flagship Astrox rackets is a stiff shaft, which only loads properly if you can swing fast enough – give one to a club player and it feels dead.

The Play solves that. It keeps the head-heavy balance and the Aero+Box frame, and pairs them with a Hi-Flex shaft that bends and springs back at ordinary club swing speeds. You get the extra weight behind the shuttle without needing the arm of a national player to use it.

The frame is Aero+Box, which is Yonex-s name for a cross-section that is aerodynamic through part of the head and squared off through the rest. The aerodynamic section cuts drag on the way through the swing; the boxed section resists twisting on contact. It is a genuine compromise design rather than marketing, and it is why this frame feels stable on an off-centre hit.

At 4U it weighs 80 to 84 g unstrung, and G5 is the smallest common grip – a combination that suits most players here, where the heat makes a heavy racket feel heavier still by the third game.

Questions

Good to know

What string tension should I ask for?

Lower than you think, and never above the maximum printed on the frame. Club players here are usually best between 22 and 24 lb - lower tension gives a bigger sweet spot and more power for less effort. High tension only pays off if you already generate your own power, and it breaks strings and frames faster in this heat.

Is the Play the same racket as the Astrox 77 Pro?

No. The Play is the entry-level version of the family - it shares the head-heavy balance, the Aero+Box frame and the Rotational Generator System, but it is a different, more forgiving frame with a flexible shaft. It is the right racket to grow into the family with, not a cheaper Pro.

What does head-heavy mean for my game?

More weight arrives at the shuttle, so smashes and clears hit harder for the same effort. The trade is a slightly slower racket at the net, where a head-light frame would flick faster. If you like to attack, head-heavy is the right choice.

What does 4U G5 mean?

4U is the frame weight before stringing: 80 to 84 g. G5 is the grip circumference and is the smallest commonly sold size. If you have large hands you can build a G5 up with an overgrip; you cannot shrink a bigger grip down.

Does it come strung?

It varies by market - Yonex ship this racket strung in some regions and unstrung in others. Ask us what the current stock is before you order, and we will tell you whether you need to budget for stringing.

How often should a racket be restrung?

The old rule is to restring as many times a year as you play per week. Strings also lose tension sitting unused, and heat and humidity here speed that up - a racket strung six months ago has softened whether you played on it or not.

How should I look after a racket in this climate?

Keep it out of a hot car. Heat is what destroys rackets here - it softens the resin in the graphite and cooks the string tension out. Store it in a cover, out of direct sun, and never leave it in a boot all afternoon.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
