About this product

The problem with a cool box in Tanzania is simple arithmetic: it cools a set number of degrees below the air around it, and the air is often above 30. A compressor unit does not care what the outside temperature is. It reaches the number you set and holds it.

This is the compact version at 16 litres, with a range from -22 C to 20 C, dual DC and AC power, and a built-in battery for stability. Supplier model AQ-16L.

Where do these figures come from?

Will it drain my car battery?

It draws far less than people expect, but a starter battery is not built for deep discharge. Run it from the car while driving and from mains when parked overnight.

Can it really freeze?

Yes, it is a compressor unit rather than a thermoelectric cool box, which is the whole point of buying one.

Where should it sit?

Somewhere with air around the vents. Boxed in with no airflow it will run constantly and still struggle.

How noisy is it?

It cycles on and off like a small domestic fridge. Noticeable when it starts, quiet between.

Does it need to settle after transport?

Yes, stand it upright for a few hours before switching on if it has been laid over, as with any compressor appliance.

How does it cope with 35 degree heat?

It works, but it works harder and draws more power. Keep it out of direct sun and pre-chill what goes in it.

Is 16 litres enough?

For drinks and a day's food for one or two people, yes. For a family weekend look at the 35 to 55 litre units.
