Where do these figures come from?

The 72 hour retention and the antibacterial liner are the supplier's claims rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. The 72 hours assumes a pre-chilled box, packed full, kept shut and out of the sun.

How do I get the most hours out of it?

Pre-chill the box overnight, fill it as full as you can, and use block ice rather than cubes. Air is what warms a cooler, so a full box holds far longer than a half-empty one.

How much ice do I need?

Roughly a third of the volume as ice for a hot Tanzanian day. Frozen water bottles do two jobs: they chill, and you drink them as they melt.

Should I drain the melt water?

Not immediately. Cold melt water holds temperature better than the air that would replace it. Drain it when it stops being cold.

Where should it sit in the car?

Out of direct sun. Shade is worth more than insulation, and a cooler in a closed boot in Dar sun is fighting a losing battle.

How do I stop it smelling?

Wash it out with warm water and bicarbonate of soda after every trip, dry it fully, and store it with the lid ajar.

Can I use dry ice?

No. Dry ice is far colder than the plastic is rated for and can crack the liner.

Can I sit on the lid?

Only where the manufacturer says the lid is load bearing. Treat an unrated lid as a lid.
