Understand what it is, though. A thermoelectric unit cools relative to the air around it rather than to a set temperature, so in a hot Dar afternoon it will keep already-cold drinks cold rather than chill warm ones quickly, and it will not freeze. For freezing, a compressor unit is the answer.

Where do these figures come from?

The figures on this page are the supplier's rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. If a number matters to your decision, ask us and we will check the unit in the shop.

How cold does it actually get?

A thermoelectric unit cools a fixed number of degrees below the air around it, typically around 15 to 20 degrees. On a 33 degree Dar afternoon that is cool, not cold, and it will not make ice. Put already-cold drinks in it and it keeps them that way.

Will it freeze anything?

No. For freezing you need a compressor unit such as the 16 litre portable freezer or the Alpicool range.

Can I leave it running with the engine off?

Only briefly. Thermoelectric coolers draw steadily and will flatten a starter battery over a few hours. Run it while driving.

Does it work as a food warmer?

Yes, for keeping cooked food warm on a journey. It will not cook or reheat cold food properly.

Where should it sit?

Somewhere the vents are not blocked. These units shed heat out of the back, and pressed against a seat they cannot.

Why is it cheaper than the Alpicool units?

Different technology. Thermoelectric is simple and inexpensive; a compressor is a real refrigeration system that costs more and does far more.

Is it noisy?

There is a fan, so there is a soft hum. No compressor means no starting and stopping.
