Product description

About this product

Portable Dual Zone Car – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A thermoelectric cool box cools a fixed number of degrees below whatever the air around it is. In Tanzania, where that air is often 32 degrees, that is not enough. A compressor fridge works like the one in your kitchen: it reaches and holds a set temperature regardless of the heat outside, and it can freeze.

The Alpicool CF series does that in two independent zones, so one side runs as a fridge and the other as a freezer. Temperature is set on the unit or from a phone app, and it runs from 12 or 24 volts DC in a vehicle or from mains power at home.

Questions

Good to know

Which size should I buy?

CF35 at 30.6 litres suits two people for a weekend. CF45 at 40 litres is the usual family choice. CF55 at 49.4 litres is for long self-drive trips and groups. Bear in mind the boot space each takes, not just the litres.

Will it run off my car battery overnight?

Compressor fridges draw far less than people expect, but a car battery is not a leisure battery. Run it from the car while driving, and from mains or a leisure battery when parked. Most units have low-voltage cut-off to protect the starter battery, but do not rely on it for a whole night.

Can it freeze as well as chill?

Yes, down to the stated minimum. In practice, freezing draws more power and takes longer in Tanzanian ambient heat than the rated figures suggest.

Where should it sit in the vehicle?

Somewhere with air around the vents. A compressor fridge boxed in with no airflow will run constantly and still not reach temperature.

How noisy is it?

A compressor cycles on and off, so you hear it start and stop rather than a constant hum. It is quieter than a domestic fridge but it is not silent.

Will it work in 35 degree heat?

Yes, but it works harder and draws more power. Keep it out of direct sun, put a shade over it if it sits in a vehicle, and pre-chill the contents rather than asking it to cool warm drinks from scratch.

What power cables does it come with?

Ask us to confirm exactly what is in the box of the unit we have in stock, since the DC and AC leads vary by model and batch.

Do I need to let it settle after transport?

Yes. Stand it upright for a few hours before switching on after it has been laid over, the same as any compressor appliance.
