About this product
Snorkeling Fins Open Back – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.
These are open-heel snorkelling fins: a foot pocket with an adjustable strap round the heel rather than a closed slipper. The strap is what makes them practical. A full-foot fin has to match your foot exactly or it either slips or cramps; an open heel adjusts, fits a range of feet and can be worn over a thin neoprene sock on a long swim to stop the strap rubbing.
The blade sits between a training fin and a diving fin – long enough that each kick moves you properly over a reef, short enough that you can still swim laps in a pool without it being absurd. For snorkelling off Mbudya, Bongoyo or the Zanzibar reefs, that is the useful compromise: enough drive to hold position against a light current and cover ground without effort, without the bulk of a full diving fin.
Fins matter more than most beginners expect. Without them you spend your attention on swimming. With them you cover the reef effortlessly, get back to the boat easily and can hold still over something worth looking at. They are also the safety item, because a current that you cannot swim against is one you can usually fin against.
Kick from the hip with a long, slow leg and a relaxed ankle. The commonest mistake is a fast bicycle kick from the knee, which exhausts you and moves almost no water. If your calves cramp, the kick is too fast and the ankle too stiff.
