Maple 1/2 Wood Jointed 57-Inch 13mm Tip Pool/Snooker Cue Stick

Cues

A 57-inch half-jointed maple cue with a 13 mm tip. Maple is the traditional cue wood because it is stiff, straight-grained and consistent, and a 13 mm tip is pool sizing - more forgiving than a snooker tip, which is exactly what most players want.

About this product

Tip Pool Snooker Cue – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

A 57-inch half-jointed cue in maple, with a 13 mm tip.

Maple is the traditional shaft wood and there is a reason it has not been replaced. It is stiff, it has a straight and consistent grain, and it transmits the stroke predictably – which is all a cue is being asked to do. Cheaper cues use softer woods that flex more and move more with humidity; more expensive ones use better-selected maple rather than different material.

The 13 mm tip is pool sizing rather than snooker. Snooker cues run 9 to 10 mm because snooker balls are smaller and the game demands precise side spin; pool cues run 12 to 13 mm because the balls are bigger and a larger tip is more forgiving of a slightly off-centre strike. If you mostly play pool, 13 mm is what you want; if you are a dedicated snooker player, ask us about a smaller tip.

Fifty-seven inches suits most adults. The half joint splits it in the middle so it fits a case, which is the practical compromise – a one-piece cue plays marginally better and is useless for travel.

Two care points that matter more in this climate than in a British club. Never lean a cue against a wall: that is how cues warp, and a warped cue cannot be fixed. Rack it vertically or lay it flat in a case. And keep it out of damp and direct sun, both of which move wood – a cue stored on a humid veranda will not be straight in a year.

Check any cue by rolling it on a flat table and watching the tip: straight cues roll smoothly, warped ones lift and drop.

Questions

Good to know

What length cue should I buy?

The standard is 57 to 58 inches, which suits most adults. If you are much taller than average, a 58 inch cue or an extension is worth having; for a child, a shorter cue is genuinely easier to control. The other question is joint: a one-piece cue plays best but does not travel, which is why most players use a two-piece or three-quarter jointed cue.

When does a cue tip need replacing?

When it has gone hard and glassy, when it has mushroomed out over the ferrule, or when it has worn down so far that the ferrule is close to contacting the ball. A hard, polished tip will not hold chalk and miscues constantly. Tips are consumables - a regular player replaces one a few times a year.

Why does chalk matter so much?

Because a cue tip on a ball is a low-friction contact, and without chalk it slips. A miscue - where the tip skids off the ball instead of gripping - is almost always a chalk problem rather than a technique one. Chalk before every shot where you are not hitting dead centre, and brush it on rather than grinding it into the tip.

One piece, two piece or three-quarter jointed?

A one-piece cue plays best because there is no joint to interrupt the transfer of energy, and it is useless for travel. A two-piece splits in the middle and fits a case. A three-quarter joint puts the split further up the shaft, closer to a one-piece feel while still packing down - which is why serious snooker players use them.

How do I look after a cue?

Store it vertically in a rack or flat in a case, never leaning against a wall, which is how cues warp. Keep it out of direct sun and away from damp, both of which move wood. Wipe the shaft with a dry cloth after playing rather than a damp one, and never leave it in a car.

How do I know if a cue is warped?

Roll it on a flat table and watch the tip. A straight cue rolls smoothly; a warped one lifts and drops visibly. Check before you buy and check occasionally afterwards - a cue that lived against a wall in a humid room will have moved.

What tip size should I have?

Snooker cues typically run 9 to 10 mm and pool cues 12 to 13 mm, because the balls are different sizes and the shot demands differ. A smaller tip gives more precision with side spin; a larger one is more forgiving. Match it to the game you actually play.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. A table is a heavy two-person item, so tell us when you order and we will arrange the right transport and talk through access.
