Two things decide whether a landing net is any good: what the mesh is made of, and how heavy the handle is when it is held out at arm length over water with a fish in it.

The mesh here is rubberised and knotless, and it solves the problem every angler knows. A treble hook in a nylon net takes five minutes and a pair of pliers to free, usually while the fish is out of the water. Rubberised mesh has no knots and no gaps to take a hook point, so the hook sits on top and lifts straight out. The same smooth surface leaves the fish slime coat intact, which is the layer that protects it from infection – if you release fish, this is the only mesh worth owning.

The handle is carbon fibre, which is where the weight saving comes from. A net that is light at arm reach is a net you hold steady; a heavy one wavers exactly when the fish comes over it.

Why rubberised mesh rather than nylon?

Nylon mesh strips slime and scales, tangles hooks hopelessly, and gets caught in gill covers. Rubberised knotless mesh does none of those things: hooks sit on top of it rather than through it, and a fish comes out of it with its slime coat intact. If you release fish, it is the only mesh worth having.

Why carbon fibre for the handle?

Weight at reach. A net is held out at full arm extension over water with a fish in it, and every gram at the far end feels like several in your hand. Carbon gives strength without the weight of aluminium or glass.

Is 180 cm long enough?

For a jetty, a rock ledge and most boats, yes. If you fish from a high wall or a boat with a lot of freeboard, the Type-D telescopic net extends to 326 cm and is the better choice.

How do I net a fish properly?

Put the net in the water and lead the fish over it head first, then lift. Never chase a fish with the net or scoop at it from behind - that is how fish are lost at the last moment.

Can I use it in salt water?

Yes. Rinse the mesh and the joint in fresh water afterwards and dry it before folding - salt in the joint is what seizes a net, and a damp net folded away goes rank.

Will it handle a big fish?

It is a landing net for moderate fish, not a lifting frame for something very heavy. For big fish, lead them into the net in the water and lift with your other hand supporting the head of the net, or use a lip grip alongside.

Type-C or Type-D - which should I buy?

The Type-C at a fixed 180 cm is lighter and simpler. The Type-D telescopes from 122 cm to 326 cm and folds, which suits high walls, boats with freeboard and travel. Buy on reach, not on price.

How do I look after a landing net?

Rinse the mesh in fresh water after every sea trip and let it dry fully before folding it away - a damp net folded in a hot boot goes rank within days. Check the joint between the head and the handle, which is where nets fail.
