About this product
Tandem kayaks usually come with a catch: the boat is excellent on the water and awful on land, because 3.2 metres of polyethylene normally weighs close to 50 kg. This hull is listed at 30 kg, which changes the calculation – two people can lift it onto a roof rack, and one strong adult can move it a short distance with a trolley.
On the water, 3.2 m and 82 cm is a sensible tandem shape. The length gives it enough waterline to hold a straight course with two people paddling out of time, which is what actually happens; the relatively narrow 82 cm beam keeps it efficient rather than making it a barge. It is a fishing-oriented sit-on-top, so the deck is moulded with seat wells, footwell positions for different leg lengths, recesses for tackle and grab handles at bow, stern and sides.
The hull is rotomoulded LLDPE polyethylene, formed as a single piece. The UV inhibitor is mixed into the plastic rather than applied as a surface coat, which is the right approach for a boat that lives near the equator – there is no coating to chalk off. Scratches from beaching it are cosmetic and can be smoothed with a heat gun if they ever bother you.
Being a sit-on-top, nobody is enclosed, water drains straight back out through the deck, and getting back aboard after a swim is a matter of pulling yourself over the side. In warm water that is a better safety proposition than a faster sit-in hull.
