Highlights

Built for surf, where a tube struggles

A flexible rescue tube is ideal in a pool. In breaking waves a rigid can is better: it holds its shape when a wave hits it, it can be driven through white water, and a casualty can hold the handles along its side without wrapping anything.

Rigid moulded body

Keeps its shape under a breaking wave instead of folding, and drives through white water.

Handles down both sides

Several places to grab, so a casualty finds one without the rescuer having to position them.

Tow line and shoulder strap

Worn across the body so the guard can run and swim with the can trailing.

High visibility

Bright colour that shows against foam and dark water, from the beach and from a boat.

Product description

About this product

A rescue can is the torpedo-shaped float used on surf beaches and open water. The lifeguard enters the water with it trailing on the shoulder line, swims out through the break, and pushes the can to the casualty – who takes hold of the handles along its side while the guard tows them back.

The rigid shape is what makes it a surf tool. A flexible tube folds when a wave hits it and has to be fought through white water; a rigid can holds its form and can be pushed straight through. It also presents several handles at once, so a casualty in a state of panic finds something to grab without the rescuer having to place them – and, critically, has something to hold that is not the rescuer.

That last point is the whole reason this equipment exists. A drowning person grabs and climbs, and the rescuer goes under. The can goes between the two of them. Approach with the can extended, let the casualty take it, and only then start the tow.

This is professional equipment for trained people. The training – how to approach, how to break a grab, how to tow, how to land someone through surf – is what makes a rescue safe, and no float substitutes for it. Where it belongs is on supervised beaches, at hotels and resorts with beach frontage, with boat crews and at open-water events.

Keep it where it can be picked up at a run. Rinse the salt off, keep it out of long sun, and check the line, the strap and the body for cracks each season.

Questions

Good to know

Rescue can or rescue tube - which do I need?

A can for surf and open water, because a rigid shape drives through breaking waves. A tube for pools, because it wraps and clips around an unresponsive casualty. A supervised beach usually has both.

Why not just swim out and grab the person?

Because a panicking person will climb onto whoever reaches them. Rescuers drown that way every year. The can goes between rescuer and casualty and gives them something else to hold.

Is it inflatable?

No - a rescue can is a rigid moulded float, which is what lets it hold its shape in surf. Some supplier listings for this type describe them as inflatable, which is not correct for a rescue can.

Does owning one make me a lifeguard?

No. It is equipment for trained rescue personnel. The approach, the grab release, the tow and the landing are all trained skills, and without them a float on its own can make a situation worse.

What colour is it?

Our supplier listing gives the colour inconsistently, so we would rather you ask us than be surprised. Tell us what you need and we will confirm what is in stock before you order.

Where should it be kept?

Somewhere it can be grabbed at a run from the water-s edge - a rack at the lifeguard station, not in a store. Seconds decide beach rescues.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the salt off after every use and dry in the shade. Check the tow line, the strap and the moulded body for cracks at the start of each season; sun is what ages this equipment fastest here.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?
