Highlights

Corrosion resistance you can see

A bright silver hook is usually stainless or tin-plated Duratin, and both exist for one reason: sea water. On this coast that matters more than it does almost anywhere.

Silver-toned finish

In Mustad range, bright silver means stainless steel or Duratin tin plating - both chosen for saltwater corrosion resistance.

Circle geometry

Hooks in the hinge of the jaw rather than the throat, which is why bait anglers use them.

Opti-Angle UltraPoint

Sharpened so less metal is removed, so the point stays sharp instead of rolling.

Nor-Tempered steel

Mustad Norwegian three-stage heat treatment, which they state adds up to 30 per cent strength.

About this product

Demon Circle Silver Hooks – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A circle hook works by geometry. The point is turned sharply inward toward the shank so it cannot easily grab soft tissue. As a fish takes the bait and turns away, the hook slides out of the throat and the point catches in the hinge of the jaw. That is why circle hooks are standard for live bait, for rods in holders, and for anything you intend to release – and why you must never strike with one.

The Demon family is Mustad circle range, carrying their Opti-Angle needle point with 4.3 UltraPoint and Nor-Tempered steel throughout. Black nickel is the family standard finish; a bright silver appearance in Mustad range means one of two things instead. Either the hook is stainless steel – Mustad SE-prefix patterns, which include the swivel-welded SE39950NP Demon Perfect Circle – or it is Duratin, their tin-based plating used on the big-game tuna and giant circle patterns such as the 39960 and 39966.

Both exist for the same reason: corrosion. On this coast, where tackle lives in salt and sun, that is worth paying for.

One honest note. Mustad do not publish a hook branded Demon Circle Silver. If you need the exact pattern – stainless or Duratin, inline or offset, and the wire strength – ask us and we will read the code off the packet in the shop before you order.

Questions

Good to know

What does the silver finish actually mean?

Either stainless steel or Duratin, Mustad tin-based plating. Both are chosen for saltwater corrosion resistance rather than for appearance. Mustad standard Demon finish is black nickel, so a bright silver hook in this range is one of those two.

Should I use stainless hooks?

They last far longer in salt, which is their appeal. The argument against is that a stainless hook left in a fish that breaks off does not corrode away, which matters if you release fish. Many release fisheries prefer plated carbon steel for exactly that reason.

How do I set a circle hook?

You do not strike. Let the fish take the bait and turn away, let the rod load, then wind steadily and lift. Striking pulls the hook straight out of the mouth - it is the commonest mistake people make with circle hooks.

Why use a circle hook at all?

Because the point is turned back toward the shank and cannot easily catch soft tissue. As the fish turns away, the hook slides out of the throat and locks in the jaw hinge. Far fewer gut-hooked fish, which matters for release and for getting your rig back.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so it is sharper and stays sharp instead of rolling over on the first piece of coral. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint - a point length 4.3 times the wire diameter.

What does Nor-Tempered mean?

Mustad three-stage computer-controlled heat treatment, done in Norway. It gives the steel a fine-grained microstructure, which Mustad state increases hook strength by up to 30 per cent over conventional tempering.

Which exact pattern will I get?

Mustad publish no Demon Circle Silver as such, so we cannot tell you from the listing alone. Ask us and we will read the pattern code off the packet in the shop and tell you the wire strength, geometry and sizes before you order.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse used hooks in fresh water and dry them before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Keep them in a sealed box rather than an open tray, and throw away any hook whose point will not catch on a thumbnail.
