Highlights

Where HAGANE starts

The Sedona is the cheapest Shimano reel with a cold-forged HAGANE drive gear. That single component is why these reels are still smooth after three seasons when cheaper ones are not.

HAGANE gear

Cold-forged rather than cut, so the metal grain runs along each tooth and resists wear.

99 cm per crank

Extra-high 6.2:1 gearing for fast lure work and instant slack pickup.

11 kg maximum drag

Real stopping power for inshore saltwater and every freshwater fish here.

SilentDrive and G-Free body

Quiet, tight-feeling operation and a centre of gravity closer to the rod.

About this product

Spinning Fishing Reel – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The Sedona is the reel Shimano sells most of, and there is a clear reason: it is the cheapest place in their range where you get a cold-forged HAGANE drive gear. Gears in cheaper reels are machined, with the teeth cut out of a blank so the metal grain runs across them. A forged gear is pressed into shape, which makes the grain follow the tooth. The result keeps meshing cleanly for years instead of developing the slack, grinding feel that cheap reels get after a couple of hard seasons.

The 4000XG is the extra-high-gear version, returning 99 cm of line per crank at 6.2:1. That is fast, which suits lure fishing: working a popper, keeping a metal slice moving, and taking up slack instantly when a fish turns and swims at you. Eleven kilos of maximum drag gives you the other half of the equation.

Around it, SilentDrive tightens the internal tolerances so the reel is quiet and feels solid, the G-Free body pulls the centre of mass back towards the rod, and the AR-C spool gives the casting distance Shimano reels are known for. The body is graphite rather than metal and there is no water sealing, so it is a reel to rinse and dry after sea use.

One thing to establish before buying, here or anywhere. There is no plain Sedona 4000 – the 4000 is only made as a 4000XG – and it exists in two generations. The current FJ weighs 290 g; the previous FI weighed 295 g. Everything else is the same. Ask us which generation is in stock if it matters to you.

Buying a Spinning Fishing Reel in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the spinning fishing reel at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every spinning fishing reel is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which spinning fishing reel suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the spinning fishing reel are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Is there a plain Sedona 4000 without XG?

No. In both the current FJ generation and the previous FI, the 4000 is made only as a 4000XG. If a listing says simply Sedona 4000, it is this reel.

FI or FJ - does it matter?

Barely. The gearing, drag and capacity are identical; the FJ is 5 g lighter at 290 g against 295 g and is the current generation. Ask us which we have in stock if you want to be sure.

What makes it worth more than a Nexave?

The HAGANE gear, principally, plus SilentDrive. Both are about how the reel feels after two or three seasons rather than on the first day. If you fish often, it is worth the step up; if you fish twice a year, the Nexave is enough reel.

What can I catch with it here?

Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally and snapper from the rocks, a jetty or a boat; catfish, tilapia and Nile perch inland. The 4000 size with 11 kg of drag covers most inshore fishing on this coast.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 7 ft to 9 ft spinning rod rated around 15-40 g. Our CRONY Aggress IV AGS4-802MH is a good match at 8 ft.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each release (FE, FI, FJ and so on). A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool. HG = high gear, XG = extra-high gear, PG = power gear, S = shallow spool.

Is it a saltwater reel?

Shimano gives it no formal saltwater rating and it is not sealed. It handles inshore use well if you rinse and dry it after each trip. For weekly sea fishing, the Spheros SW is the sealed option.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and oil the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
