adidas’s Tiro League in the thermally bonded version – the TB in the name – in size 5.

The construction is the whole product. A stitched ball has its panels sewn together with thread through stitch holes, which leaves seam grooves on the surface and, more importantly, a path for water straight into the ball. A thermally bonded ball has its panels fused with heat and adhesive into a near-seamless skin. Three things follow: a more uniform surface and therefore a more consistent flight, far less water taken on in the wet so the ball does not get heavier as a match goes on, and better shape retention over time – which is adidas’s own claim, that it always stays in shape for the best touches.

That water point is not academic through masika and vuli. A stitched ball in a downpour gains real weight and changes how it flies and how it feels off the head; a bonded ball does not.

The trade-offs are honest ones: bonding costs more than stitching, and a bonded ball cannot be re-stitched if the skin fails.

On the FIFA mark, adidas state it carries the FIFA International Match Standard stamp. That is the entry-level mark in the FIFA Quality Programme, now generally called FIFA Basic, and it means the ball was independently laboratory tested and passed. It is not FIFA Quality Pro and we will not describe it as such.

What pressure should a size 5 football be?

The Laws allow 0.6 to 1.1 bar - 8.5 to 15.6 psi - at sea level, and most manufacturers recommend the middle of that, around 0.8 to 1.0 bar or 11.6 to 14.5 psi. The target is usually printed next to the valve, and that figure beats any general advice. Inflate to the lower end if the ball will sit in the sun, because heat raises the pressure.

Why is over-inflation such a common mistake?

Because people pump until the ball feels right rather than using a gauge, and an electric pump will happily run past the correct pressure. A hard ball is not a better ball - it loses the give that lets you control it, it stings the foot and the head, and the constant tension stretches the bladder and pulls the seams apart. An over-inflated ball ages in weeks rather than seasons.

What do the FIFA marks mean?

There are three. FIFA Basic - previously called IMS, International Match Standard - is the entry-level mark. FIFA Quality is a more demanding set of tolerances. FIFA Quality Pro is the highest, with the tightest tolerances on roundness, rebound, water absorption and shape retention. All three mean a ball was independently laboratory tested and passed. They are not the same standard, and a ball carrying the entry mark should never be described as Quality Pro.

Latex or butyl bladder - does it matter?

Yes, and it is a real buying decision. Latex gives a livelier, softer feel and is what better match balls use, but it leaks noticeably faster and needs topping up before most sessions. Butyl holds air far longer and needs less attention, at the cost of feeling slightly less responsive. Neither is wrong - it depends on whether you want feel or convenience.

What are the size 5 dimensions?

A size 5 football is 68 to 70 cm in circumference and 410 to 450 g at the start of a match - the senior ball, for ages 13 and up. A size 5 rugby ball is a different thing entirely: 280 to 300 mm long, 740 to 770 mm long circumference, 410 to 460 g, and it takes only 9.5 to 10 psi. Do not inflate a rugby ball to football pressure.

Any tips for using a pump needle?

Wet the needle before you put it in - a drop of water, glycerine or valve oil is enough. A dry needle tears the rubber valve as it goes in, and a torn valve means a ball that will not hold air and cannot be repaired. This is the single commonest way people ruin a new ball.

How should I look after a ball?

Deflate it slightly if it is going into storage for a long time, so the bladder and seams are not under constant tension. Wipe mud off rather than leaving it to dry on, because grit works into the seams. Keep it out of prolonged sun, and never leave it in a car boot. Check the pressure before every session rather than once a month.
