Highlights

Ask about certification before anything else

A helmet either passed the test or it did not, and there is no middle ground. The standard the ICC and ECB require is BS 7928:2013+A1:2019, and the test that matters fires a ball at the faceguard to see whether it comes through. That is the question to ask about any helmet, this one included.

Steel grille

A metal faceguard is the part that actually stops the ball reaching your face.

Protective shell

Hard outer shell over an energy-absorbing liner, which is how any helmet works.

Adjustable fit

A helmet that moves on impact protects the wrong place - fit is not a comfort matter.

For batting and keeping up to the stumps

The two positions where a ball arrives at the head with no time to react.

Product description

About this product

This is a cricket batting helmet with a hard shell and a steel grille.

Let us start with why this is not optional. A cricket ball weighs about 160 g and arrives at the head with almost no time to react. Facial and skull injuries in cricket are severe and, on rare occasions, fatal. Every level of organised cricket now requires helmets for batters and for wicketkeepers standing up to the stumps, and no coach should allow a junior to face a hard ball without one.

The mechanism is two-part. A hard outer shell spreads the force of an impact over a wide area and stops penetration. An energy-absorbing liner underneath crushes slightly to slow the head down more gently than the shell alone would. The grille stops the ball reaching the face.

The gap between the peak and the grille is the detail that has changed most in the last decade, and for a grim reason. Older helmets let a player adjust peak and grille independently, and players opened the gap for visibility – then balls came through it and caused serious facial injuries. Helmets meeting the current standard have a fixed, narrower gap. Never modify it, and never buy a helmet because the gap looks comfortable.

Our supplier does not publish a certification for this helmet, and we are not going to imply one. If you need a helmet certified to BS 7928:2013+A1:2019 – and for any competitive cricket, or for a junior, you should – tell us and we will source one with documentation. We would rather have that conversation than sell you something on an assumption.

Questions

Good to know

What is the helmet standard I should look for?

BS 7928:2013+A1:2019. It is the British Standard the ICC and ECB require, and the test that matters is a ball fired at the faceguard: the helmet fails if the ball penetrates the gap between peak and grille or the grille deflects onto the face. Adult helmets are tested with a mens ball at 28 m/s and junior helmets with a junior ball at 23 m/s.

Is this helmet certified?

Our supplier does not publish a certification for it, and we will not imply one. For competitive cricket, and for any junior, you should be wearing a helmet certified to BS 7928:2013+A1:2019 - tell us and we will source one with documentation.

Why does the gap between the peak and the grille matter?

Because a ball can go through it. Older helmets let you adjust the peak and grille independently, and players set the gap wide for visibility - then balls came through it and broke faces. Modern compliant helmets have a fixed, narrower gap for exactly that reason. Never modify it.

Should women and juniors use a helmet tested with a junior ball?

Yes, and it is a point most people miss. A womens or junior ball is smaller, so it can pass through a gap that stops a mens ball. A helmet certified only against the mens ball has not been proven against the smaller one. Buy a helmet tested for the ball you will face.

Does a wicketkeeper need a helmet?

Standing up to the stumps, absolutely - a deflection off the bat arrives with no reaction time at all. Standing back, most keepers do not wear one. Many governing bodies now mandate helmets for keepers standing up in junior cricket.

When should a helmet be replaced?

After any significant impact, even if it looks fine - the shell and liner absorb energy by deforming and do not fully recover. Also when the grille is bent, the harness is frayed, or the padding has hardened. In this climate, heat and sweat age the liner faster than in cooler places, so check it every season.

How should protective equipment fit?

Snug enough that it does not move when you do, loose enough not to restrict you. Pads should let you run; gloves should let you grip without gaps at the fingertips; a helmet should not rock when you shake your head. Kit that moves on impact is protecting the wrong place at the wrong moment.
