About this product

The SG RP Ecolite is an entry-level batting glove from SG-s Rishabh Pant line, built around dual-density foam rather than traditional cotton-filled rolls.

That construction difference is worth understanding. A cotton-filled roll is soft and compresses evenly – traditional, comfortable and effective, but heavy for its bulk. Dual-density foam layers a firmer outer material over a softer inner one: the firm layer spreads an impact across a wider area, and the soft layer underneath absorbs what gets through. For the same level of protection it is lighter, and a lighter glove is one a young player can wear comfortably for a long innings without their hands tiring.

The palm is cotton and PVC rather than leather. That is the honest compromise at this price, and it is the thing to be aware of in a humid climate – a synthetic palm loses grip as your hands sweat more readily than leather does. Cotton inner gloves help considerably.

Five sizes from extra-small junior upwards is the practical strength here, as with the Campus. Fitting children properly is what most kit bags fail at, and a glove that is too big slides on the handle and stops a young player developing any feel for the bat.

What is dual-density foam?

A firmer outer layer over a softer inner one. The firm layer spreads an impact across a wider area and the soft layer absorbs what comes through. It gives similar protection to cotton filling at less weight.

How should batting gloves fit?

Snug, with about half a centimetre of space at the fingertips. Gloves that are too big slide on the handle and dull your feel for the bat; too small and your fingers press against the end, which is exactly where a ball hits. Try them holding a bat rather than with an open hand.

Do batting gloves come in left and right hand versions?

Yes - a pair is made for a right-handed or a left-handed batsman. The protection is heaviest on the fingers of the bottom hand, because that is the hand facing the bowler on the bat handle. Wearing the wrong pair puts the reinforcement on the wrong fingers. Tell us which you bat.

Is the palm leather?

No - cotton and PVC at this price. Be aware that a synthetic palm loses grip as your hands sweat, which matters in this climate. Cotton inner gloves underneath help a great deal.

Should I wear inner gloves?

Yes, especially here. Cotton inners absorb the sweat that would otherwise soak into the glove lining and rot it, and inners can be washed while the gloves cannot. In this humidity they roughly double the life of a pair of gloves.

Why is the bottom hand padded more heavily?

Because of where it sits. On a bat handle the bottom hand faces the bowler, and a ball that jams into the handle or lifts off a length hits those fingers first. That is why good gloves put extra protection on the lower-hand fingers, and why the two gloves in a pair are not identical.

How do I look after protective gear in this climate?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade. Padding and straps that stay damp in a closed kit bag grow mould and rot within weeks here - far faster than the equipment wears out from use. This is the single thing that decides how long cricket kit lasts in Tanzania.
