Highlights

The ball most cricket is actually played with

Far more cricket in this part of the world happens on a street, a compound or a beach with a tennis ball than on a square with a leather one. A heavy tennis ball is made for exactly that - it behaves enough like a cricket ball for the game to be real.

Weighted

Heavier than an ordinary tennis ball, so it carries off the bat and bounces rather than dying.

Pack of 3

Enough for a game, which matters because tennis balls go over walls.

Red

Visible against the surface you play on - pick the colour that suits where you play.

Playable without full kit

Much safer than a leather ball, which is why street and beach cricket uses these.

Product description

About this product

Heavy Tennis Cricket Ball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

These are heavy tennis balls for cricket, three to a pack, in red.

A heavy tennis ball is a different object from the one used for tennis. An ordinary tennis ball is far too light for cricket: it stops in the air, refuses to carry off the bat, and swerves unpredictably in the lightest breeze. Weighting the ball changes all of that – it flies, it carries when you hit it, it bounces off a hard surface the way a cricket ball does, and bowlers can get pace and bounce out of it.

That is why this ball, rather than a leather one, is what most cricket in this region is actually played with. Street cricket, compound cricket, beach games, school breaks and the vast majority of social matches all use one. It needs no square, no pads, no helmet and no expensive bat – a PVC or Kashmir willow bat and one of these is a game.

It is also the ball taped-ball cricket starts from. Wrapping electrical or cloth tape around a tennis ball adds weight, smooths one side and lets a bowler generate real swing – a whole variant of the game with its own skills, and one that has produced a remarkable number of international fast bowlers.

Buy several. Tennis balls go over walls, into drains, onto roofs and into the sea, and a game that stops to look for the only ball is not much of a game. A pack of three is a sensible minimum.

Questions

Good to know

Why use a heavy tennis ball instead of an ordinary one?

Weight. A normal tennis ball is too light for cricket - it stops in the air, it will not carry off the bat and it swerves in any breeze. A heavy tennis ball is weighted to fly and bounce more like a cricket ball, so shots carry, bowlers get bounce, and the game behaves like cricket.

What is taped-ball cricket?

Wrapping electrical or cloth tape around a tennis ball. It adds weight, smooths one side, and lets a bowler get real swing and pace out of it. It is the version of the game most people in this region grow up playing, and a heavy tennis ball is the usual starting point.

Is it safe without pads and a helmet?

Far safer than a leather ball, which is why most street and beach cricket is played with one. It can still hurt - a heavy tennis ball to the face at pace is a real blow - so keep close fielders alert and use a helmet if you are batting against fast bowling on a hard surface.

What is the difference between a heavy and a light tennis ball?

Weight, and it changes the game completely. Heavy balls carry, bounce and can be bowled at pace - they suit older players and hard surfaces. Light balls are gentler, slower and safer, which suits young children and indoor play.

Which colour should I buy?

Whichever shows up against the surface you play on. Yellow is more visible in most conditions and against dark ground; red shows better against light sand and pale concrete. It makes no difference to how the ball plays.

How long do they last?

Weeks to months, depending on the surface. Rough concrete and tarmac wear the felt off fast; sand and grass are far gentler. Most are lost long before they wear out, which is the real reason to buy a pack.

Can I use them in a proper net?

Yes, and many clubs do for warm-ups, catching practice and junior sessions. For serious batting practice against the ball you will play with, you need leather.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
