Highlights

A kayak that fits in a car boot

No roof bars, no trailer, nowhere to store a hard kayak. Inflates in minutes, deflates into a bag, and comes with everything you need to paddle.

Complete in the box

Kayak, 230 cm aluminium paddle, Air Hammer hand pump, seat, two fins, carry bag and repair patch. Nothing else to buy.

Three separate air chambers

If one chamber is punctured the others keep the boat afloat. It is the single most important safety feature on any inflatable.

Two removable fins

Without fins an inflatable wanders. With them it holds a line, which on a Dar es Salaam beach with a cross-breeze is the difference between paddling and fighting.

Inflata-Shield material

Tear-resistant Bestway fabric with an I-beam floor that firms up under pressure, so the hull holds its shape rather than folding under you.

Product description

About this product

The reason most people in Dar es Salaam never own a kayak is not the price of the kayak – it is where to keep it and how to move it. A hard kayak needs roof bars, a place to store three metres of plastic, and two people to lift it. An inflatable solves all three at once: this one comes out of a bag, takes a few minutes on the pump, and goes back in the boot when you are done.

It is a one-person boat, 275 cm long and 81 cm wide, with a closed cockpit. That closed deck matters more than it sounds – it keeps water from slopping in over the sides in chop, so you stay dry and the boat stays light. The seat is inflatable with a backrest, and it can be moved to trim the boat depending on how much you are carrying.

Two removable fins clip on underneath, and they are what makes an inflatable behave. Without them a light boat with a flat bottom will wander with every stroke and every gust; with them it tracks straight and turns when you ask it to. The hull is Bestway’s Inflata-Shield fabric over three separate air chambers, with an I-beam floor that stiffens under pressure so you are sitting on something solid rather than a soft mattress.

It suits Msasani Bay, the creek at Mbezi, lagoons at Kigamboni and Bagamoyo, Zanzibar and Mafia, and the calm side of any of the lakes. It is a recreational kayak for sheltered water – not surf, not open ocean crossings, not whitewater. Wear a buoyancy aid, tell someone where you are going, and watch the offshore wind, which on this coast can push a light boat out faster than you can paddle back.

Questions

Good to know

How long does it take to inflate?

Five to ten minutes with the supplied hand pump, less if two of you take turns. Pump it firm rather than rock hard - the manual gives the working pressure and over-inflating in the sun is how seams get damaged.

Is it safe on the sea at Kigamboni or Zanzibar?

In sheltered bays and lagoons in calm conditions, yes, with a buoyancy aid. It is a recreational kayak, not a sea kayak - stay inside the reef, keep away from surf, and take the offshore wind seriously. A light inflatable is pushed out to sea far faster than you can paddle back.

What happens if it gets punctured?

The three separate chambers mean a puncture in one does not sink the boat. A repair patch comes in the box, and small punctures in this material patch permanently in a few minutes on dry, clean fabric.

Can two people fit?

No. It is a one-person boat rated to 100 kg including your gear. For two, the Cove Champion X2 or the Rapid X2 is the right size.

Do I really need the fins?

Yes, on open water. Without them the kayak wanders with every stroke. Take them off in very shallow water or over rock and coral where they would catch.

What is the capacity exactly?

Bestway publish 220 lb / 100 kg for this model in some markets and 120 kg in others. We list the lower of the two, because on a boat the conservative figure is the one to plan with.

How do I look after it in salt water?

Rinse the whole boat with fresh water after every sea trip, including the valves and the underside, and let it dry completely before rolling it up. Salt left to dry in the seams is what ages an inflatable fastest on this coast.

Can I leave it inflated in the sun?

Not for long. Equatorial sun both degrades the material over time and raises the internal pressure, which stresses the seams. Let some air out if it is sitting in full sun, and store it deflated, dry and out of direct light.
