About this product

The one fire method that still works when everything is wet.

A lighter runs out of gas and fails in wind. Matches are useless once damp. A ferrocerium rod does not care: scrape it hard and it throws sparks at around 3,000 C, wet, cold, windy or at altitude, thousands of times over.

This one has a shaped wooden handle, which is more comfortable to hold and to scrape against than the bare rods, and a flat steel striker on a cord. The striker doubles as a small ruler and a bottle opener.

It is a backup rather than a primary. Most sensible kits carry a lighter and this, because the lighter is faster every time it works and this one works every time.

How do I actually use it?

Build your tinder nest first, before you touch the rod. Hold the rod close to the tinder and scrape the striker down it firmly and fast, pushing the rod forward rather than flicking the striker, so you do not scatter what you are trying to light. Practise once at home. Doing it for the first time in the dark, in wind, is how people give up.

What tinder works here?

Dry grass, bark shavings, cotton wool, a smear of petroleum jelly on cotton, or a commercial firelighter. A ferro rod throws sparks, not flame, so it needs genuinely fine dry material to catch. Along the coast after rain, carry your own tinder rather than relying on finding it.

Is this better than a lighter?

It is a better backup, not a better primary. A lighter is faster and easier every time it works. This is what you use when the lighter is empty, soaked or lost, and it will still be working years later.

Does it work at the beach?

Yes, and salt air does not affect it the way it affects a lighter mechanism. Rinse sand off the rod so the striker runs clean.

How do I look after it?

Almost nothing. Keep the striker from rusting and keep sand out. A ferro rod develops a dull oxide layer over time; scrape that off and the fresh metal underneath sparks as well as ever. Keep the wooden handle out of prolonged wet.

Will it still work in the rain or after a soaking?

That is the argument for a ferrocerium rod over matches or a lighter. It throws sparks whether it is wet or dry, at any temperature, and it does not run out of fuel. What still needs to be dry is your tinder - carry some in a sealed bag, because a spark onto wet grass achieves nothing.
