Swimming Hand Paddles - Ergonomic PP Paddles with Silicone Straps

Others

Rigid polypropylene paddles on silicone straps. They add resistance to build pulling strength, and - more usefully - they make a sloppy catch impossible to ignore, because a bad hand angle slips instantly.

Highlights

They do not just build strength, they tell the truth

A paddle is a lie detector for your catch. Get the hand angle right and it locks onto the water. Get it wrong and the paddle slips sideways, immediately and obviously. That feedback is worth more than the strength gain.

Rigid PP blade

Stiff enough to load the pull properly and hold a flat surface against the water.

Silicone strapping

Soft over the fingers and wrist, and easier to get on with wet hands than a hard tube strap.

Drainage holes

Let some water through, which cuts the strain on the shoulder and keeps the paddle from sliding on entry.

Contoured shape

Follows the palm, so the paddle loads through the hand rather than levering at the wrist.

Product description

About this product

Hand paddles increase the surface area of your hand, so every stroke moves more water. The obvious effect is strength: the lats, shoulders and forearms all work harder over the same distance. The less obvious effect is the one that actually matters, which is feedback.

A paddle is rigid and flat. If your hand enters at the wrong angle, or the wrist collapses at the start of the pull, or you push water backwards without first setting the catch, the paddle slips – and you feel it instantly, every stroke. Swimming without paddles the same fault is invisible, because a bare hand simply slices through and you never notice. Coaches use paddles as a diagnostic as much as a training load.

The drainage holes are there for the shoulder. A solid paddle with no holes puts a big load on the rotator cuff at the front of the stroke, which is how swimmers injure themselves with paddles. Holes bleed off some of the peak load and also stop the paddle skating on entry.

Build up slowly. A few lengths at the start, not a whole session, and stop the set the moment the stroke rate drops or the shoulders feel anything sharp. Paddles are the training aid most likely to cause an injury, and always for the same reason: too big, too soon, over too many lengths.

Questions

Good to know

Will paddles hurt my shoulders?

They can, if you use too large a paddle for too long before the shoulders have adapted. Start with a few lengths per session, keep the stroke rate up, and stop immediately if anything feels sharp at the front of the shoulder.

How do paddles improve technique?

They punish a bad catch. A paddle slips sideways the moment your hand angle or wrist position is wrong, so the fault becomes something you feel on every stroke rather than something only a coach can see from the deck.

Should a beginner use them?

Not for strength. A beginner-s shoulders and stroke are not ready for the load. Once the stroke is reasonably established, short paddle sets are a good way to learn what a proper catch feels like.

Why do they have holes?

To let some water through. That reduces the peak load on the shoulder at the front of the stroke and stops the paddle skating across the surface as your hand enters.

How tight should the straps be?

Finger strap firm, wrist strap loose or off entirely once you are confident. Many coaches remove the wrist strap deliberately - if your hand position is wrong the paddle falls off, which is the clearest feedback there is.

Can I use them with a pull buoy?

Yes, and it is the standard combination: buoy between the thighs, paddles on, legs still, all the work in the pull. Keep those sets short for the same shoulder reasons.

How do I look after them?

Rinse in fresh water and dry in the shade. Check the silicone straps for cracks before each session - a strap that fails mid-set means a paddle on the pool floor and a hunt for it afterwards.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
