The problem with most fish grips is that they need two hands – one to open the jaws and one to hold the fish – and you have a rod in one of them. A pistol grip solves it. You hold it like a tool, squeeze the trigger to open the jaws, clamp the lower jaw of the fish, and release it with the same hand when you are done.
That makes it fast, which is the other thing that matters. For a fish you intend to release, the single most important variable is time out of the water, and a grip you can operate in one movement without fumbling saves more of that than anything else.
It is built from aluminium alloy and stainless steel – light in the handle, strong and corrosion resistant at the jaws – and it is small: 22 cm and around 120 grams, which is pocket or belt size rather than locker size.
It is sized for small to medium fish. Grip the lower jaw, support the body with your other hand, and keep the fish horizontal. Never hang a heavy fish vertically from the jaw – it damages the jaw joint and the spine, and it is precisely the fish you want to release unharmed.
