About this product

The Big Mouth is Mustad hook for bulky soft plastics – fat tube baits, creature baits and thick worms, the kind of lure that fills the gap of a normal hook and leaves the point nothing to travel through. Its answer is the extra-wide bend: more room around the bait, and still bite to spare when a fish crushes it.

It is 1X Strong – one wire size heavier than standard – and forged, which flattens the wire slightly through the bend and stiffens it against opening under load. The shank is offset, so the head of the bait is gripped and does not slide down toward the bend on every cast. The point is Mustad Opti-Angle needle point with 4.3 UltraPoint and the steel is Nor-Tempered.

Mustad make it from 2/0 up to 6/0 in their standard listing and as far as 12/0 in the wider range, in packs of five, in black nickel. Their own target list is bass, perch, zander, pike and walleye; in Tanzania that translates to bass, tigerfish, Nile perch and catfish inland, and snapper, grunter and queenfish on plastics inshore.

Why does an extra-wide bend matter?

Because a bulky soft plastic fills the gap. When a fish crushes a Texas-rigged tube bait, the point has to travel through the bait to reach the jaw. A wide bend leaves that clearance; a narrow one means you pull the lure out of the fish mouth.

What is 1X Strong?

Wire one size heavier than standard for that hook size. It resists opening under load at the cost of needing slightly more force to drive the point home - a sensible compromise on a lure hook.

How do I Texas rig it?

Point into the nose of the bait about a centimetre, out through the side, slide the bait up over the offset to the eye, then rotate the hook and bury the point back just under the surface of the plastic. Done properly it is nearly weedless.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so it is sharper and stays sharp instead of rolling over. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint - a point length 4.3 times the wire diameter.

What does Nor-Tempered mean?

Mustad three-stage computer-controlled heat treatment, done in Norway. It gives the steel a fine-grained microstructure, which Mustad state increases hook strength by up to 30 per cent over conventional tempering.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse used hooks in fresh water and dry them before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Keep them in a sealed box rather than an open tray, and throw away any hook whose point will not catch on a thumbnail.
