A two-can value pack of Muc-Off bike spray – the post-wash protectant step, bought at a better price per can than singly.

Bike spray is what goes on after the bike is washed and dried. It is a water-dispersing liquid with a high oil content that drives moisture out of bolt heads, cable entries, the chain and pivot points, then leaves a thin, non-sticky protective film behind. That film inhibits corrosion and stops dirt adhering, so the bike stays presentable and the next wash is faster.

Near the Indian Ocean this step is worth more than it is anywhere inland. Salt-laden air attacks bare metal steadily, and a protective film applied after every wash is the cheapest defence a bike has.

One firm limit: never apply it to tyre treads or braking surfaces. An oil film on a rim brake track or a disc rotor removes your braking.

What exactly is in the duo pack?

When do I use bike spray?

After washing and drying the bike, and before lubricating the chain. Spray over the frame and drivetrain, let it disperse the remaining moisture, then lube.

Can I spray it on the brakes?

No. Keep it off tyre treads and braking surfaces entirely. An oil film on a rim brake track or a disc rotor will remove your braking, and a contaminated disc pad has to be replaced.

I ride near the coast. Does salt air matter?

It does. Salt-laden air off the Indian Ocean accelerates corrosion on chains, cassettes, cables and bolts far faster than inland. Rinse the bike after a beach or Kigamboni ride, dry it, and re-lube - that single habit does more for drivetrain life here than any upgrade.

Why does drying the bike matter so much here?

Because of the salt and the humidity. Water left standing in bolt heads, on the chain and around the cassette starts corrosion quickly on the coast. Dry the bike, then lubricate - ten minutes that adds years to a drivetrain.

Does it replace chain lube?

No. It drives moisture out and protects surfaces but does not lubricate the inside of a chain link. Use it before lube, not instead of it.

How should I store it in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and away from a hot car boot. Aerosols and solvent-based products do not enjoy sitting at 40 degrees C, and a cupboard indoors is fine. Close the cap properly - humidity on the coast gets into anything left open.
