About this product

A complete drivetrain cleaning solution in a 500 ml trigger spray. Muc-Off make this one in two sizes and the 500 ml is the version that comes with a trigger fitted – the 750 ml does not, which is worth knowing if you have used the larger bottle before.

It can be used two ways. Spray it directly onto chainrings, cassette and derailleurs and let it lift the grime, or pour it into a chain cleaning device and run the chain through. Muc-Off designed it to work with their X-3 Dirty Chain Machine specifically, and the two together clean a chain in a couple of minutes with almost no mess.

The formula is fully biodegradable and safe for metal, plastic, rubber and seals, which is what makes it usable on a derailleur without worrying about the bushings and pivots.

On dusty roads the whole drivetrain needs this treatment, not just the chain. A clean chain running over a filthy cassette is clean for about a kilometre.

Good to know

Spray it on or pour it in?

Either. Spray directly onto chainrings, cassette and mechs for a general drivetrain clean, or pour it into a chain cleaning device to do the chain thoroughly. Most people end up doing both.

Is this the version with the trigger?

Yes. Muc-Off fit the trigger to the 500 ml; the 750 ml bottle does not come with one.

What is the right order to wash a bike?

Rinse the worst off with low pressure, degrease and clean the drivetrain first so its grime does not run over clean paint, then wash the frame and wheels, rinse, dry, and lubricate the chain last. Doing the chain first and the frame second is the single commonest mistake.

Why clean the cassette and not just the chain?

Because a clean chain picks up whatever is on the sprockets within the first kilometre. Cleaning the chain alone is largely wasted effort on a dusty drivetrain.

Will it harm my disc brakes?

Keep any oil, lube or polish off the rotors and pads. If a lube or spray reaches a rotor the brake will squeal and lose power, and a contaminated pad usually has to be replaced. Cover or shield the rotors when you spray, and wipe rotors with a dedicated disc brake cleaner if anything lands on them.

What do I do with the dirty water?

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.

Is this the right choice for Tanzanian conditions?

For most of the year around Dar es Salaam you are riding in heat and fine dust, which is dry-lube territory - a dry or wax lube leaves a drier film that dust does not stick to. Switch to a wet lube through the long rains in March to May and the short rains in November and December, when washing off matters more than staying clean.
