The red Shimano SPD-SL cleat, and the one to be careful about. SM-SH10 is the fixed-mode cleat: zero float, which Shimano describe as one hundred percent fixed. Once the shoe is clipped in, the foot does not rotate at all.

That is exactly what a sprinter or a time triallist with a professionally set bike fit wants. Every fraction of movement at the pedal is energy not going into the crank, and a locked foot is the most direct connection there is.

It is also why it is the wrong cleat for most riders. Your knee does not track in a perfectly straight line as you pedal, and with zero float the joint has nowhere to go – it fights the pedal instead. On a bike that is not precisely fitted to you, that shows up as knee pain within a few hundred kilometres. If you are not certain your fit is right, the yellow SM-SH11 with 6 degrees of float is the safer choice, and you will not lose anything you would notice.

Release angle is 12 degrees. They clip into Shimano SPD-SL pedals, whose spring tension is adjustable at the pedal.

Good to know

Should I be using a zero-float cleat?

Only if you have a properly set bike fit and know your knee tracking suits it. Zero float gives the knee no room to follow its natural path, and on a bike that is not precisely fitted that becomes knee pain quickly. Most riders are better served by the yellow SM-SH11.

What is float and why does it matter?

Float is how far your heel can swing sideways while the shoe stays clipped in. Your knee does not track in a perfectly straight line as you pedal, and float lets it follow its natural path. Too little float for your body forces the knee to fight the pedal, which is how cleat choice becomes a knee injury.

Will these fit my shoes and pedals?

These are SPD-SL road cleats. They bolt to a three-bolt road shoe and clip into SPD-SL road pedals only. They will not fit two-bolt SPD mountain bike shoes or SPD pedals, which is the commonest mistake people make ordering cleats. Check your shoe sole - three holes in a triangle means SPD-SL, two holes in a line means SPD.

How should I set them up?

Start with the cleat centred under the ball of your foot and the shoe pointing straight ahead, then ride and adjust in small steps. If you have any history of knee trouble, a proper bike fit is worth more than any component you could buy. We can point you to someone.

Can I make clipping out easier?

Yes - on the pedal, not the cleat. Shimano SPD-SL pedals have an adjustable spring tension screw. Wind it to the softest setting while you are learning, then tighten it once clipping out is second nature.

How often do cleats need replacing?

When the walking pads are visibly worn down, when you can rock the shoe in the pedal, or when unclipping starts feeling unpredictable. Worn cleats release unexpectedly, which is how people fall at junctions. They are a cheap part - replace them before they become a problem.

Are counterfeit cleats a problem?

Yes. Generic SPD-SL-compatible cleats are sold openly and the tolerances are often wrong, which shows up as unpredictable release. Genuine Shimano cleats carry the ISMSH model code on the packaging. Ask us if you want to check a set you already own.
