About this product

A fat-tyre mountain bike for adult riders, offered in two configurations: 26 inch wheels with a 7-speed drivetrain, and 24 inch wheels with a 21-speed drivetrain. High-carbon steel frame, disc brakes front and rear.

Wide tyres are a genuinely good idea on Tanzanian surfaces. A fat tyre run at low pressure spreads the load over a much larger contact patch, which is what lets it float over soft sand rather than digging in, and it absorbs washboard murram in a way a narrow tyre simply cannot. On the sand tracks around Kigamboni and the beaches north of the city, that difference is the difference between riding and pushing.

The steel frame is worth understanding rather than apologising for. Steel is heavier than aluminium, which is why you rarely see it on expensive bikes. It is also more forgiving over rough ground, more durable against the knocks a bike takes here, and – the part that matters most in Tanzania – it can be welded and repaired locally by any competent fundi. An aluminium frame that cracks is usually finished.

Disc brakes front and rear are the right choice for wide tyres, which are heavier and carry more momentum than a standard mountain bike tyre.

Which configuration should I choose?

The 26 inch 7-speed is the simpler, more robust bike - fewer gears means less to adjust and less to go wrong, which suits sand, beach and rough tracks. The 24 inch 21-speed gives a wider gear range for hills and suits a shorter rider. Tell us your height and where you intend to ride and we will advise.

What frame size do I need?

That is exactly what we want to confirm with you before you order. Frame size against rider height is the single thing that determines whether a bike gets ridden or gets left in the hallway. Message us with your height and we will check availability against it.

How wide are the tyres?

We are confirming the exact width with the supplier rather than assuming it from the category name. Fat bikes range from around 3.0 to 4.8 inches and they ride very differently. Ask us and we will tell you the actual figure for the bike in stock.

Why a steel frame rather than aluminium?

Steel is heavier but more forgiving over rough ground, more durable against knocks, and - the part that matters here - repairable. A cracked steel frame can be welded by a competent local fundi; a cracked aluminium frame usually cannot.

What tyre pressure should I run?

Lower than you think. The point of a fat tyre is the large contact patch you get at low pressure - on sand, well below what feels normal. Start low, and add air only if the tyre squirms in corners or you start bottoming out on the rim.

Is there a maximum rider weight?

We are confirming that with the supplier before sale. It is a figure that genuinely matters on a bike, and we would rather tell you the real number than leave you to guess.

Can I get spares for it locally?

Yes for the wear parts - brake pads, cables, chains, tubes. Fat bike tyres and tubes are a more specialised size, so if you ride it hard it is worth keeping a spare tube on the shelf rather than assuming one is available on the day.
